Squished icon on custom toolbar button (2003 SP3)

I created a 16x16 icon in GIF format as a custom image for a macro on a toolbar in Word. The image did not fill the 16x16 size -- I left a transparent border of one pixel around the image.

I copied and pasted and, despite being 16x16, Word squished it, making it shorter by two pixels and wider by one pixel. Same thing happened when I pasted a 14x14 image.

Then I created an image that filled the 16x16 grid, and Word still squished it, and cut off one pixel on the right. Hmmmmm.

Is there some magic formula and/or program that will allow me to create an icon that Word won't mangle? Or at least will mangle predictably?
Thanks,

Hmm, I cannot reproduce the problem that you describe in Word 2002. A 16 by 16 gif copies faithfully to a toolbar button...

Thanks for trying Hans.

I've attached my gif. This is the one that pretty much fills 16x16. Could you try using this? Perhaps there's something wrong with it.

Thanks,
Kim

This is what I get in Word's button image editor after pasting your gif - it fills the 16x16 grid exactly...

Well dang!

It looks perfect everywhere but on my toolbar. Here's what it does to my 16x16 icon:

It's now 14 pixels high (though you can't see it very well depending on your view in the forums, there is a row of 2x16 pixels along to top were courtesy of Word) and, although 16 pixels wide, note that the darker line down the right is gone (also courtesy of Word).

This is weird. Thanks for your help, Hans.

Best,
Kim

I'll try it in Word 2003 tomorrow.

I'm baffled. It works OK for me in Word 2003 SP3 too. I did the following:
- Download your .gif file.
- Open it in Paint.
- Press Ctrl+A, Ctrl+C to select the entire picture and copy it to the clipboard.
- Switch to Word.
- Select Tools | Customize...
- Right-click a toolbar button and select Paste Button Image from the popup menu.

Hans,

When I followed your steps and walked my image through Paint, everything worked perfectly.

In the past, I never had to do that -- I don't much care for Paint and have multiple other image editing programs to play with. I've always been able to simply copy and paste from one of them. But this time, if I selected all and copied/pasted from another program, the option "Paste Button Image" would be grayed out. If I pasted the image into a Word document, then copied and pasted from there, the option was no longer grayed out, but Word squished the image in the manner about which I have whined, above. Perhaps a tiny bit of baggage is transferred with such a maneuver and takes up the first 32 pixels on the button.

However, I've learned my lesson here. From now on, all my images take a tour through Paint. Since it works and all.

Thanks so much,
Kim
