Missing Menu (XP SP2)

What is the problem when right-clicking on a program in the All Programs menu doesn't result in the usual context sensitive menu? Nothing happens when right-clicking!

I don't know the answer, Chuck. I just now tried to "break" mine but couldn't make it happen. Give Kelly's place a look: Troubleshooting Windows XP, Tweaks and Fixes for Windows XP.

I did a conservative search on just the word "start" to be sure I didn't miss anything and there's lots of entries. Just for starters (no pun intended), number 31 right or 117 left. Then keep looking, there's more...

Have you started with checking the basic settings?

Right-click Start button, select Properties.
Click Customize...
Select the Advanced tab.
In the scrolling list "Start menu items": Check that the box "Enable dragging and dropping" is checked; it should be if right-clicking et al is going to work.

Re: Missing Menu (XP SP2)

To Argus and Bob: I await Chuck's response to see how he makes out with this and y'all's suggestion, but the reverse did not do anything here. I have dragging checked, so just to see if I could "break" mine, I un-checked it and still see the context menu on right-clicking any entry on the programs list. I don't know why, so let me see what happens when Chuck tries to "fix" his. It occurs to me that it may take a reboot and I didn't go that far.

Thanks for that one Bob. It didn't seem to matter over in <!post=this thread,679024>this thread<!/post> though or the OP missed it totally; but one should always start with the basic. Then it's a completely different matter that it isn't always a basic setting gone wrong (and also a different matter that one needs to know the basic settings of the OS in the first place).

Re: Missing Menu (XP SP2)

Hi Al,
Odd. It should work (or in this case, not work to right-click) without the need of a restart, as with all the Start menu settings.

As I mentioned in the other thread I referred to in my reply to Bob, and as Bob showed here, it can be a policy setting also.

Then of course one wonders how a change like this can happen all of a sudden, guess we will see when Chuck comes back.

Thanks to all. Enabling "dragging and dropping" did the trick. I was unaware of that option in the Advanced settings for Start properties. You learn something new every day with computers.

Good to hear!

Now there is only one lady left with problems, if I understood it right. We'll see what happens in your other thread.
