Bullets and Numbering (2000 SR1a)

I thought I knew my way around bullets and numbering but this is one is about to start me dribbling.
On two PCs I have the same normal template, the same document based on another template and both PCs have the same copy of that template.
Both run under NT and as I typed this I realised the builds for NTare different and have not been rerun after the installation.
The problem is that in either a new document based on normal or the document based on the other template, numbering works fine. A small indent by default, I can get rid of that using Bullets and Numbering and if I increase the indent using the toolbar indent, it works fine.
With bullets, the bullet leaps across the page, Bullets and Numbering shows a massive indent for the bullet and the text so adjust those and it looks fine. Then hit indent and it leaps across the page again. If I don't hit indent but go to another paragraph and click the bullet icon, it leaps across as if I hadn't reset it and changes the bullet from square to round.
In autoformat everything related to list etc is turned off.
Any ideas apart from the version of NT or confirmation that is likely to be the cause?
Thanks

Just a guess. How about Format>Tabs>Clear All?

It seems to me that I've heard that you do not want to apply direct formatting to the tabs / indents in bullets and numbering items. The formatting is handled through list template definition? I may be completely off-base here. Have you read Word's Numbering Explained by John McGhie (mvps.org/word/FAQs/).

IMO if you haven't read it, you don't have a handle on bullets and numbering. Some disagree with the conservative approach of that article; I'm not well enough educated to do so.

Any chance we can blame the damnable "AutoFormat as you type" feature?

Thanks for the replies and sorry about slow response, been out in the land of pen and paper.
Autoformat options had been cleared and there were no tabs. The article Charles referred to is more about numbering and oddly numbering was working fine. However, given the relationship between bullets and numbering I followed some of the steps. I think resetting the gallery had more effect than anything else. Now not 100%, but then it is Microsoft! However, it's a whole lot better most of the time.
Thanks guys.
