    DEP error (Windows XP SP2)

I have a user who gets a DEP error. The name of the program listed is Microsoft fgfgfgfg.
I am puzzled by that - how can I find out what program that is and how to get rid of it?

    Thanks,

"... how can I find out what program that is ..."

By asking the user what s/he does when s/he gets the DEP error.

Sometimes the context in which something happens is a great clue to solve a potential problem.

Then, not all DEP errors means that one should "get rid of" the program. Perhaps there is an updated version, perhaps it is a known issue and it is possible to create an exception for that program etc.

I have logged on to her computer and get the same error. It happens during startup. We do not know what the program is that causes the error. If I can find that out, I can set up an exception or get rid of the program. However, until I know the program, I can do nothing.

It sounds like you have a trojanvirus.
There are mentions of that sequence of letters in regards to a "pokapoka62.exe" virus amongst others.
If you can't get past the startup screen, I would try to boot into safe mode to run one of the good anti virus programs available.

Also, type "misconfig" ( without the quotes ) at the prompt to see just what programs are listed in the OS startup sequence.
Any unfamiliar one particularly pokapoka62.exe could be unchecked and then see how the regular boot goes.

Thanks. I will run spybot and adaware and see what happens. Have not found anything suspicious in msconfig, McAffee showed nothing.
    Thanks again,

Might I also suggest Malwarebytes Anti-Malware? I've been very impressed with it.

Download the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> version (from the button on the left) and install, then go to the Update tab first to Check for Updates, update, then back to the Scanner tab to Scan...
