    Printers (XP)

Where are the printers and faxes stored in XP? I had to reinstall XP on my computer and would like to restore all the printers that I once had access to. I took an image of my computer prior to doing the fresh install of XP.

    Thanks,
    John

If you did a clean install of XP you will need to reinstall the drivers and software that came with the printer. You may be better off by going to the OEM site and downloading a new set from them.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Printers (XP)

To install, remove or change settings go to Start>Control Panel>Printers& Other Hardware.

But that doesn't appear to be what you are asking. I'm guessing that you want to find the printer installations on the image you took and restore the installations from there to the new drive. Not sure that's possible.

But since a printer must be connected to function and XP auto detects any connected hardware and installs it and the necessary drivers or asks for the location of the drivers if it doesn't have them, can you expand on why you want to "restore" the printers rather than just re-install them ??

It's a mixture of files in the C:WindowsSystem32 folder and lots of registry entries. It's probably best to reinstall the printers using the Printers and Fax Devices control panel. Simply restoring some files from your image probably wont work.

    Re: Printers (XP)

I can almost confirm what Hans said, in that I went Googling specifically to the Microsoft site and looked at a number of hits that "seem" to indicate that it either can't be done or would be more registry grunt work than re-installing individual printers. Just for the heck of it, I went to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESYSTEMCurrentControlSetControlPr int just looking to see if I could find a nice, neat "package" of entries and it's a long, long set of keys.

Thank you for your replies. I thought I would have to reinstal or add the printers and just needed a confirmation.

I did have a number of printers accessible via a LAN both Domestic and International.

    Regards,
    John
