Easy Restore Points - XP, Vista

Just ran across this neat little utility - SysRestorePoint.

NOTE: "This utility is only intended for Windows® XP and Windows Vista. Version 1.3 and later require the .NET Framework 2.0 to be installed."

Doug modified the original 1.0 version for me to produce no message at all, just do it!

Whom ever uses this utility, I wish them good luck. I used it a couple of years ago and it caused problems and messed up Windows System Restore. It took me months to get it removed and to get SR working properly again. If it's been updated it may work better but use at your own risk.

A couple of years ago? I guess that was in your pre-SP2 era, so the problems you had could have resulted from just about anything. I had a Google search and couldn't find any reference to problems with the software.

It's a remarkably trivial action for the user or a program to set a Restore Point (observe the small size of the EXE file), so I'm amazed that it could cause any problem. Many programs (e.g. Spybot, CCleaner, etc) ask whether they should set a Restore Point before doing something which potentially could require recovery action.

You are so right, BATcher; and as you know, it is the same with installers which are restorept.api-compliant. Oh look, there is that word that almost looks like a file name.

I do have several programs that ask to create a restore point. But, when SR was broken, I always got the message that Restore had failed. I'll see if that still happens, but no big deal, I can always set one manually before I let any program do it's stuff.

I know what you mean. I spent several hours today trying to find the installation file for IntelliMouse Pro. I got so tired of searching that I almost gave up, but persistence paid off. My shortcut to it was broken and I had to reinstall.

I have no idea what broke SR but the main things is that it's fixed now.

It was some of your mucking with things and NOT remembering what and when you did it.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Easy Restore Points - XP, Vista

Dave, I do sometimes try to fix my problems without going to a forum and asking for help, that's true fact. But don't must of us do the same thing? It's only when I come to the conclusion that I need further assistance that I post and ask for help. If that's called "mucking" than I plead guilty. Am I supposed to post for every little thing that crops up, I don't think you or anyone else would appreciate that.

As for NOT remembering what and when I did it, you would be amazed at the logs I've generated. I write down the date and times of everything I do, each and every day. If the pages didn't take up so much space in my desk drawers I would have records of my actions going back to 2000 when I first started making and keeping a daily log. I will admit that with programs I don't use often, and something goes wrong, by reviewing my logs I cannot tell just which thing I did was the cause of the problem. In that I hardly think that I am alone.

I understand that some of you guys think that I am an air head and should stick to pencil and paper, but I assure you that assumption is totally incorrect.

Re: Easy Restore Points - XP, Vista

Please, my good friend, tell me just what I could have done to break SR. If you can find one thing please let me know and I promise you I will never do it again.

As you are well aware, I make a restore point every day as soon as my computer boots. Sometimes I will make another if I am about to do something that possibly could cause problems. About once a year I may have to restore my computer to a previous state, but that's few and far between. Do you see anything there that might break SR?

I can't wait for your reply.

Re: Easy Restore Points - XP, Vista

I apologize if I've upset you Gloria. That was not my intention. What I am trying to make you see is that perhaps you are trying to hard to manage your computer and that might be the root cause of many of your problems.

Since you've asked if I see anything in your description of how you use System Restore that could be the cause of your problems with ("break") SR, I will give you my considered opinion based on that. You should probably not set a restore point each day. If you are setting a restore point prior to installing a program, an update to Windows or any other program, that should be plenty. Especially since Windows sets some of these restore points automatically and you are using an uninstall program to back out of any bad or unwanted installation, manual restore points become less necessary and you yourself admit you only ever use it once a year or so to restore your system. My .

And as Forrest Gump said, "That's all I have to say about that."

I apologize to you Doc, I don't know why I was blowing off steam like that. I know you only try to help me the best you know how and I ask for and value your opinions.

I make a restore point every day because the couple of times when I didn't, it was needed. So, to avoid needing one and not having it available was a lesson well learned. You see, sometimes a problem arises not caused by a particular program that the uninstaller could take care of. That's when SR is the answer. Do you understand what I'm trying to explain?
