Outlook 2003: blackberry to new PC (SP2)

Husband's computer died and a new one is scheduled to arrive from Dell next week. How do we get the information on his blackberry (contacts, calendar) to populate Outlook on this new desktop? He has been doing his e-mail online with Cox cable. When he reconnects with them, will all of the e-mail transfer over? What about the e-mails on his old computer prior to it death and this online access? Is all of that lost?

    TIA,
    gg

Do you have a backup of your husband's .pst file(s) from shortly before the crash? If so, you can use those to restore e-mails, appointments, contacts etc. to the new PC.
If not, do you know if the hard disk of the old PC is still readable? If so, you could transfer the .pst files, otherwise all the old e-mails etc. are lost.

Take a look at BlackBerry Desktop Software.

Sadly the answer is NO to both of these questions. He did not backup files (including the .PST file) and the hard drives are in limbo (are on a PC that may have a damaged motherboard and are in a RAID 0 configuration). Old computer will be shipped to our son in CA for possible resurrection, but do not have anything functional at this point in time.

Looking for a strategy for the new PC; do you think this will work?
Install MS Office 2003 and do all the upgrades and patches
Open Outlook. Should we connect with our cable company first or sync with the Blackberry? Our cable company (should be able to talk us through connecting with them, although any words of wisdom are appreciated). Is there a setting in Outlook that says sync with the Blackberry such that BB information will overwrite the lack of information in Outlook? If so, where?

If my son can get the .PST file off the old hard drives, how do you merge that with the current files that will be on the new PC?

Thanks in advance for any information that will ease this transition,
    Georgette

I have no experience at all with Blackberry or other handhelds, but there are other Loungers who do, I hope they will chime in.

If your son can recover the .pst file or files (there may be more than one) from the old PC, you can copy it to the new PC.
Then open it in Outlook using File | Open | Outlook Data File. The mailbox with all its subfolders will appear in the navigation bar on the left hand side. Your husband can drag individual messages or entire folders to his new Personal Folders file.

I use BB Desktop with Lotus Notes, so your settings and menus may vary, and setup process may be different from changing the configuration after installation. You may want to set up BB desktop without synchronizing, and first use the Backup and Restore option to save your BB information.

When you first set up BB desktop, at some point you should get to a dialog to configure Synchronization. It first asks what you want PIM information to use, then with what application - on the Application selection tab, there are radio buttons to select Import, Export or Synchronize. Select Import for your first run, continue with the rest of the process. (Yes, Export seems to be the logical choice, but the Help states "Import: Transfers information from the PIM to the other application.")

Later, open the BB Desktop, right click the Synchronization icon, select Configuration, Configure Synch, walk through the dialogs and change that button to Synchronize, OK out.

Many thanks John and Hans. Will try your suggestions once we have the new computer and, hopefully, a .PST file from the old computer's drives.
