    Unknown Plugin (FF 3.0.4)

I'm trying to play some video tutorials using Firefox 3, but it says I need a plugin. When I try to get the plugin, FF returns a message saying:

    No suitable plugins were found.
    Unknown plugin (video/avi).

The videos play in IE 7, but I prefer FF.

How do I go about identifying the required plugin and correct the problem?

    Cheers,
    Regards,
    PaulB

Let me assume you have Windows Media Player and QuickTime. If you open these programs from the Start menu and visit their preferences/options, you should be able to make one of them the default plugin for that MIME type. Then, when you restart Firefox, it should pick up that configuration information.

    Jefferson, thanks for your response.

You are right in assuming I have both Quicktime and WMP installed. QT is currently not set to handle .avi files. Avi files default to WMP. The WMP plugin for FF does not, however, reflect that (see graphic).

What is not clear to me is why the FF plugin finder cannot identify a suitable plugin, be it WMP, QT or whatever.

I suppose I could let QT handle avi files, but I really would prefer not to go down that path if WMP can do it. Seems to work OK in IE 7.

I don't see any obvious way to convince WMP to register itself as the plugin for video/avi. There is an extension for Firefox 2 named MIME Edit that would let you do that, but it has not be updated for Firefox 3. You could manually hack the mimeTypes.rdf file, but... it might be easier to use QuickTime. <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15>

Thanks, Jefferson. I've been using IE to deal with this problem and I think I'll leave it at that. There is one issue with IE, but that is a problem for another forum.

    Cheers,
