Browsers can't find Adobe Flash (Firefox 3.0.3; IE 7.0.5730.11)

Under Firefox and IE, sites that need Adobe Flash don't work properly, but provide a link to download it.

However, each time I download it, it goes to an Opera directory (I also have the Opera browser), without giving me a choice. The next time I go to a site using Firefox or IE, it still can't "find" Flash.

How can I download Flash so that Firefox and IE can find it?

    You might try this:
    - Go to Doc'XP - Téléchargements divers (it's in French).
    - Scroll down to "Réparation : Réparation du moteur Flash."
    - Click the drill icon on the left hand side. This will prompt you to download or open Flashrepair.exe.

Which browser do you use when you download it in the first place? Adobe presents the Flash player that suites your browser. Let's say you use Firefox (Fx) and goes here: http://www.adobe.com and click on Get ADOBE FLASH PLAYER, you will go to the download and install page:
    Install Adobe Flash Player
    Adobe Flash Player version 10.0.12.36

Check that it's for the correct OS and browser, non-IE is called "Firefox, Safari, Opera". IE uses ActiveX and is different, as you know. You may get a prompt if you would like to add adobe as a trusted site to install programs in your Firefox settings, but that is not needed at all.

    Troubleshooting:
If you would like, you can also take a look at the second part of my <post:=741,517>post 741,517</post:>, about the Flash Player uninstaller. It can be used to uninstall all Flash Player plug-ins and ActiveX controls.

If you don't like to run "unknown" repair programs from the net, Adobe Support for the Flash Player have some advices:

    "Unable to view Flash content"
    "[...]
    3rd Party 'Flash Player' Cleaners

In some cases you may have run a non-Adobe 'fix' for Flash Player permission problems. In some cases these tools can actually cause further Flash Player problems. If you have run any type of registry cleaner or other fix tool Adobe suggests you run the /clean uninstaller discussed in "Safe versions security restrictions when installing Flash Player" (TechNote kb402435), then reinstall Flash Player."

In TechNote kb402435 they mention the uninstaller again, and the use of a clean switch. I have not had the need to run the uninstaller with the /clean switch, but it probably should work nice.

Anyhow, a start over with uninstalling all (three: IE, Fx, Opera?) plugins with the uninstaller would be one way to try to troubleshoot it.

When you are finished, check your version here.

In addition to what has already been posted, there are some sites that do not detect Flash 10 is installed in Firefox. If that is a problem for you, a workaround is to install Flash 9.

First of all uninstall Flash - How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control
You can download the latest version of the Flash 9 setup file from http://kb.adobe.com/selfservice/viewConten...06791&sliceId=2] (For Firefox, you need the Netscape version)

    Argus:

    Thanks for the advice.

When I go to install Flash, per your instructions, it doesn't ask me where to install...just automatically puts it in an Opera directory. (I have Opera, IE and Firefox).

The Uninstall tool only uninstalls (an older version?) from a Macromedia directory.

I was able to download the IE version of Flash in IE.

However, to get the Opera/Firefox version in a place where Firefox can find it, I tried moving my Opera files to a new directory. But Flash still tried to download to the old (no longer existent) Opera directory and thus failed to install.

Should I try uninstalling Flash from the Control Panel? (Add/remove software).

I do not have the setup that you have (since I do not use Opera; only Fx and IE) so I can not test.

What browser do you use when you go to the Adobe site and get that result? Is Opera your default browser? You should be able to download the Flash Player installer: install_flash_player.exe.

If you visit the page I mentioned with Firefox and on the next click "Agree and install now" you would get to the "download page":
    <hr>Thank You!

    Your download will start automatically.
If it does not start, click here to download

If a dialog box appears with the option to run or save, click run<hr>
If you have JavaScript enabled you will see a dialog box similar to the one in the screen shot, though this one is in Swedish. Just click save and the install program will be downloaded to your default download location as per your Firefox settings. Then if you like, do the usual AV scanning etc. and run the installer.

If you do not have JavaScript enabled you will not see a dialog box, in that case just click the link "click here to download".

If you visit the page with Fx and do not get the above, have you by any chance the adobe site as a trusted installer in your Fx settings? Tools | Options | Security | Exceptions… button.

As I said that isn’t necessary, and anyhow it should not install it to Opera.

When using the Flash Player uninstall tool it will remove both the plug-in and ActiveX versions, and remove the entries from the Add or Remove Programs in the CP. But of course, if you would like to start over it's possible to remove them with the use of "Add or Remove" also. But for an uninstall to work your "Opera files" should be back in their original place otherwise they will not be found and uninstalled (if you uninstall all player plug-ins). Adobe recommends the Flash Player uninstall tool.

Re: Browsers can't find Adobe Flash (Firefox 3.0.3; IE 7.0.5730.11)

Unfortunately no matter how I uninstall Flash (either with Adobe's own un-installer, or with Windows' Add/Remove programs), when I re-install Flash, I'm not asked where to re-install, and it automatically tries to re-install in the Opera directory (even if I've moved the Opera files out of there).

How do I "convince" the installer to install in the Firefox directory?

    PS
I just tried TonyE's suggestion (install Flash 9) and it worked...still went to the Opera directory, but Firefox was able to find it.

Thanks to everyone for your help!

For info, there is no need to install Flash in the Firefox plugins folder. Copying the files there can lead to problems as it may end up with 2 different versions of Flash installed.

Flash usually installs itself to C:WindowsSystem32MacromedFlash
Firefox can use the Flash plugin from this location. Opera can not so it is also copied to the Opera plugins folder.

Re: Browsers can't find Adobe Flash (Firefox 3.0.3; IE 7.0.5730.11)

After reading this tread I decided to check my Java files. I found two in the C:WindowsSystem32MacromedFlash folder.

    1. FlashUtil10a.exe
    Properties: Adobe Flash Player Helper 10.0r12 = 2.30 kb= 10/4/08 = Version:10.0.12.36 = Attribute: Read Only

    2. NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe (same path)
    Properties:
    Adobe Flash Player Helper 9.0 r124 = 213 kb = 3/24/08 =Attribute: empty = File Version: 9.0.124.0

I think the oldest one should be removed. Your opinion please.

Is the plugin installed as a .dll, as I saw no other .exe files?

Don't simply throw it away. Uninstall the flash player using the uninstaller from How to uninstall the Adobe Flash Player plug-in and ActiveX control, then go to Adobe - Adobe Flash Player and reinstall it.

When you've done that, NPSWF32_FlashUtil.exe should be up to the latest version too.
