Control Panel (Win XP Pro 3)

    Three issues:
    1) - In control panel, Internet Options will not open when clicked. It used to, but not now.
    2) - I cannot get IE7 to install. No issue downloading, just will not install.
    3) - Some times Restore works, some times it doesn't.

I am using Firefox as a current browser, but need IE for most Microsoft downloads. At least that's what I'm finding out.

    Thoughts anyone?

Re: Control Panel (Win XP Pro 3)

Have you checked the PC with the latest definitions for your anti-virus and anti-spyware software?

When the different things that you mention do not work; do you get any error messages? If so, can you tell us what they say.

In the background, Windows File Protection is always running protecting some vital OS files. However, it can happen that some of these vital files gets corrupt, changed etc. so there is a tool to run for those very rare cases. Have you tried running System File Checker (SFC)?

You should have your OS installation CD ready if the tool needs to copy some file from the CD, but it does look at other places first.

You run the SFC with a switch, in this case /Scannow, and it will run immediately, it takes some minutes.

So in Start | Run... | type "sfc /scannow" (without the quotation marks and note the space before /) and press OK.

When finished remove the CD, if needed, and reboot to ensure that any replaced file is correctly copied.

1.) Internet Options - is the file inetcpl.cpl present in c:windowssystem32? If so, what happens if you double click it? You can use TweakUI to see if it is hidden.

2.) IE7 - have you tried downloading IE7 from Download details: Windows Internet Explorer 7 for Windows XP rather than using Windows Update?

3.) Do you mean System Restore? Check Here are some troubleshooting steps to take when System Restore fails to restore: for some things to try.
