Add Printer

I print to a network printer mostly in black and white. Whenever I change to color, I need to adjust the properties. Is there a way to setup two printer profiles (B/W & color)? I go through the entire process of adding a printer but I never get the second copy in the Printer and Faxes window. Any ideas?

Did you try to put different printer name (one of the last steps of "Add a printer" wizard) ?
Open Printers folder, run "Add a printer" wizard and install the printer second time with a different name. Do not use "automatically detect and install my printer" option, but use the same port as already used by your printer. And then adjust properties on one or both of them.

I never get an option to change the printer name. If I change the name of the printer after locating it through browsing, it says it can't find that printer.

Do you have access to the printer's Printing Preferences ?? I use a local printer from Canon and their software installs options that allow you to perform maintenance tasks, set color quality, print quality, and set up profiles.

Yes, but since it's a network printer, accessing the printer properties is a slow process. Since the mix of B/W to color is about 50/50, whichever way I set the properties, I'm constantly changing them.

Once again:

1. Click on Start button and then select Printers and Faxes (for Windows XP) or click on Windows logo and type Printers in Search box, then click on it (Vista).
2. Select your printer, then right-click it and from pop-up menu select Properties.
3. On the Properties window, click Ports tab and write down the name of the port (as IP_192.168.0.10). Click OK.
4. Click on "Add a printer" option (on the left pane on WinXP or on the ribbon in Vista).
5. On the wizard window, select ADD A LOCAL PRINTER (Vista) or "Local printer attached to this computer" (WinXP) option.
6. On the next screen, select "Create a new port" option, then "Standard TCP/IP port" from drop-down list next to it.
7. Type IP address which you wrote down (as 192.168.0.10). Click Next, OK.
8. On the next screen, select your printer from the list (manufacturer first, model next). If it is not on the list, insert the printer installation CD and click "Have disk" button. Then navigate to the driver folder on CD.
9. Select "Keep existing driver" if prompted, then type the name of the printer of your choice. Click OK to install the printer.
10. When installation is complete, open installed printer properties and make changes.

I forgot to add, that it is a good practice to assign static IP address for your printer on your router. (For details, see router manual.) It is better to select an address on the end of the range: if the range is 192.168.0.2 - 192.168.0.50, select the last one.

I'm guessing that the properties window doesn't offer you the option to create profiles ??
