Reply to post without emailing to originator

Not sure if this is workable, but I feel a little guilty for not thinking before I replied.

In the Scuttlebutt Thread, I posted a rather long reply to one by Legare on Facts. I suddenly thought that he is probably going to get hit twice by that post, first by email notification and then if he returns to the Thread to read other replies.

This isn't a problem for me as I have a permanent link at work, but for the many with dial-up connections it must be rather tiresome.

Is there anything I can do when reply, with a long post, to reduce the load on these links? Or am I worrying for no reason?

But seriously - every user has the option to de-select notification if it is a problem to them. I think you can rely on users to use their common sense on that one.

However - if your conscience is really killing you - here's what you do:
Reply with the shortest possible reply: e.g. "Hi Legare, I've just replied" and post it.
Legare (only) gets a minimalist notification.
You then immediately edit your post, adding the 2,000 word essay you originally planned on posting.
(No notification is sent out for the edit.)

Result? Your conscience is clear and Legare is totally confused.

You probably replied to one of Legare's longer posts in Scuttlebutt, so he deserves what he gets.

However, Legare has email notification turned off in his profile so he does not get any email notifications. He gets way too many replies to have to read them all twice.

Ah, but why read the ones you've been notified about in your email client? Why not just use it so that you know the thread is alive, so you can shoot over to the Lounge? Once the red numerals and triangles have gone, time to delete the lot from OE (choosing alphabetical sort). It works for me...
