Do you mean you want to learn 'programming'?
What exactly would you like to do?

    Re: WrittingSoftware??

Computer "programming" means choosing a "language" that you want to LEARN and that means "software." So, I'd like to suggest you look at AutoIt v3 - Automate and Script Windows Tasks - For Free! It is Vista compatible and so it seems a good place to start.

Languages such as Visual Basic and C++ are others.

    Re: WritingSoftware??

I'll move this thread to the Software forum and see if someone can offer more advice - otherwise Googling on

write gadgets

brings up just over 36,000,000 suggestions - such as How To Write Gadgets - to start you off

    Re: WrittingSoftware??

If you want to create gadgets for the Windows Vista sidebar, consider Microsoft's free "Express" line of software development tools. You can read about them, and associated tutorials, here: http://www.microsoft.com/express/. The advantage of using these tools is you get a very helpful editing environment (compared with, say, Notepad). And there is an active support community on Microsoft's forums. The disadvantage is that you will be relying on components that generally do not work well on other platforms, such as MacOS or Linux, but that might not be relevant to your project.
