    Default import spec. (A2000)

How does one change the settings (delimiter, text seperator) of the "default import spec"?

I don't know if you can change default settings, but in the Import window you can click on Advanced... and save settings. The next time you have to Import with the same specifications, return to Advance... and click Spec... and take a saved specification.
If you do your Import by code, there is a parameter in the DoCmd.TransfertText. See Helpfile

    Hope this help.

My probelm stems from the transfertext default import spec. using a comma as delimeter and the " as the text qualifier. Also, the reason I have to inport this way is because there are variable numbers of fields in my import file, increasing randomly, always growing larger.

Maybe you will have to write your own function in vba to import your files.
I did it once to import txt-files where records has no delimiter.
I was reading one record at a time in one string, and then I had to analyze the string and put each part in a field.
It works fine but is not so fast as TransferText

FYI: I changed the default delimiter through regedit for the text engine in Jet.
