Walkman Mp3 player (XP Home SP3)

    Hello,
    Happy Thanks Giving to everyone.
I wasn't sure where to put this post.
I mostly transfer music to my Walkman Mp3 player (NWZ-S616F) using Windows Explorer.
This week when I connect my player Windows Explorer opens a new window, as always, but it opens as:
Name: Storage Media Type: Generic hierarchical.
The music plays OK, but when I try to edit song properties, I can't change anything. I like to add missing info etc.
Any suggestions or ideas on what changed and how to correct?

    Thanks,
    JohnSo

What was the new window named before this problem started ?? Is there software installed on the computer for the Walkman ??

I'm not sure what it was before. It looks like it's treating like a mass storage device.
Maybe a driver problem or something like that.
I tried to reinstall the CD but, it only has a older version of Windows Media player on the CD, no drivers.
I used to be able open The properties menu for each song and add album info etc.
Now it looks it opens like a text properties window.

Can you edit those special properties of an .mp3 file on your hard disk?

I suspected that it was treating it as mass storage and my first thought was that it is a driver problem, but needed the info about the software to be sure.

Do you have the option not to install the older version of WMP ?? Also, the OS and service pack # would be helpful to diagnose this. Did the problem begin after a Windows update or patch was installed ??

You might try a System Restore to a date you are sure is before the problem was noticed. If you do and it restores the functionality you are looking for, then you might have to reinstall any updates or patches that were removed with the system restore. If that is the case, you should install them one by one until you find the one that borked your Walkman software. Then you will have to choose which is more important, the update or your Walkman.

Post back and let us know how you made out.

Yes, They can be edited on the hard drive. The problem is only when I try to edit on the player.

Strange - but at least you have a workaround, even if it's rather clumsy: copy the song to hard disk, edit its properties, then copy it back to the MP3 player.

This is the option I will be using.
It's not a big deal. Just strange.

    Thanks
