# Thread: Vat at 15% (Excel 2007)

1. ## Vat at 15% (Excel 2007)

Hi

Excuse my ignorances but if you arrive at 17.5% by dividing a sum by 47 and then multiply by 7 what would the formula be for 15%

example C9 contains 117.5 D9 contains formula =C9/47*7 E9 results in 100

what would this formula =C9/47*7 be for 15%

Regards

I always did /117.5*17.5, which I found easier on the brain......

C10 = 115
D10 = =C10/115*15 Results in 15.

You could put 15% (the VAT percentage) in a cell, say in H1.

You can then use the formula

=C9/(100%+\$H\$1)*\$H\$1

Because the reference to H1 is absolute, you can fill down the formula and it will still refer to H1.
And if the VAT percentage changes again, you only have to edit the value in cell H1 instead of updating all formulas.

Plenty of information at HMRC.gov.uk, including the fractions - 7/47 > 3/23.
