Nonbreaking hyphen too long (2003 SP3)

Long ago I read the very helpful information in <post#=156,693>post 156,693</post#> . Ever since, I've made good use of the keyboard shortcuts to insert a non-breaking hyphen. I also use Ctrl+Shift+hyphen to get the same result. I find just one problem: The keyboard shortcuts give me what appears to be an en-dash instead of a hyphen. Whatever this mark is, it is clearly longer (and thicker or darker) than the hyphen it replaces. Is there a way to get an ordinary nonbreaking hyphen?

If you show non-printing characters (the button on the toolbar is "on"), the non-breaking hyphen displays as a much wider hyphen then the ordinary one.
But if is "off", and also in printed output they will be exactly the same width.

How right you are! I ordinarily leave the pilcrow turned on, and that's why I see what I see. Thank you!
