    Old Style Search Engine

While searching through Kelly's Korner I found the subject above on line 49, titled: Old Style Search Engine On or Off.

Can someone please tell me what the Old Style Search Engine looks like? Anything will probably look and act better than the one I'm using now.

    Appreciate it,

    Gloria.

No, it wasn't that hard, but I don't think we're on the same page. I'm looking for a viable replacement for a desktop search engine that can replace the one I lost (Search Companion).

I expanded the search and found 2: Google Desktop Search (freeware) and SearchWin ($29.95). If you or anyone else are aware of others, I'd appreciate knowing about them.

I don't use any desktop search utilities myself. Too much drag on the system for very little gain, IMHO. But that's why there is chocolate and vanilla.

Hopefully, one of the other Loungers with first hand experience will chime in.

I still like the <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15> version of Copernic Desktop Search - The Search Engine for Your PC.

I've installed Windows Search on a number of systems both XP & Vista. It works quite well in my work & home environments. It is very much beyond what was originally released with XP.

I use Locate32, it is amazing. I still remember and have Norton's Utilities and the search in that was ff.exe but locate32 does what i want for free

That is it, originally it was supposed to be full of malware but I use Lavasoft and CA and both give it a tick. With my memory I would be lost without Locate32

    Gloria,
If you had downloaded the script and just looked at its small contents, perhaps a bell would have rung?

It would look like this <post:=738,484>post 738,484</post:>, with or without the use of Kelly's reg-files.

    I can second Ed's endorsement of Locate32.

    Re: Old Style Search Engine

I looked at the page for Copernic Desktop Search, it doesn't seem to place much emphasis on computer searches or am I missing something?

I want a search engine that only searches files & folders on my hard drives or at least makes it the main search location.

    Thanks for the suggestion.

I tried to install Windows Search 4.0 and MiniDm downloaded it. Then I got a message that said "Windows cannot open this file. To open this file Windows needs to know what program created it." It seems to objecting to the file extension .msu, can it be change

What do you suggest I do now?

Download the version for XP (32-bit) instead of the Vista version.

    Re: Old Style Search Engine

In other words, the link you posted previously was for users of Vista? I wish you had included that information. But, no harm down, I have a Windows Search icon on my desktop which I will remove.
