Deleting a user account (XP Pro)

I added an account to my XP, and when I logged back on, I could access only the new account, and not the original account. I don't want the new account, I want to delete it. I rebooted in Safe Mode, went into the Administrator account, then went into the control panel to delete the new account, but the changes available do not include "delete". I can change the name, change the password, and change the account type, but I can't delete the account. I believe I have to delete the account in order to see my administrator account again, right?

Can somebody tell me please how to delete the darn new account?

Thanks much!

I'm not sure whether this exactly matches your situation, but on my work XP PCs and 2003 servers I use the MS XP Resource Kit command line utility DELPROF. Download it and go through the tedious process of installing it to get the DELPROF.EXE you actually want!

But make very sure you add the switch /P when you run it in a Command Prompt windows under an Administrator-type account, and type N to each profile you do not want to delete!

Are you accessing the account list through the control panel applet or through the computer management console? Can you post a picture?

It isn't easy to know what has happened, but you say you have created a new account and now can only access that one (plus built in Admin account). Obviously, as you know, one cannot delete an account that is in use, currently logged on to. But what you describe: "changes available do not include "delete""; it seems like you are looking at the last account left.

With User Accounts (in CP) it isn't possible to delete the last account if you are using the Administrator account. This is to prevent a situation were one is only left with the built in Administrator account (of course it's possible to create a new one, but some, on XP Pro, perhaps would try running on the Admin account on a daily basis).

I don't understand what you mean by: "I believe I have to delete the account in order to see my administrator account again, right?"

You just said you used the Administrator account, albeit from Safe Mode, but anyhow. Are you thinking about the "missing" user account which perhaps had administrator privileges?

Apart from Joe's question:
Do you see the expected accounts when you type:

"net user"

at a command prompt?

It sounds like you were using "The Administrator" account all along. To do this one had to have the system hacked up front.
So when a additional account was added, then the "Administrator" account is now hidden. I would NOT go back to using the Administrator account.
Move or copy all of your data from that account folders to your new folders.

Is this on a Pro or a Home version of XP?

If you couldn't logon to your existing account, it is possible that is something wrong with it. Do not try to mess up with another account, you only would make situation worse!

If you use Welcome screen and you don't see your old account, removing a new account will not help you. If you use "classic" logon dialog, simply type the username and the password in corresponding boxes.

Logon to Administrator account in Normal mode. If you see Welcome screen without a link to Administrator account, press Ctrl-Alt-Delete twice or disable Welcome screen from existing account (Start > control Panel > User Accounts > Change the way users log on or off > Uncheck "Use the Welcome Screen" )

From Administrator account, run Computer Management console (Start >Run, type compmgmt.msc and hit Enter). On the left pane, navigate to Users and Groups > Users. On the right pane, select the account in question and check its Properties. Make sure account is not disabled. You can delete the account from here, if you want (it does not delete corresponding files in "Documents and Settings" folder.)

If you see nothing wrong with the account, maybe it is hidden from Welcome screen. Close Computer Manager, open Regedit , navigate to
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESOFTWAREMicrosoft Windows NTCurrentVersionWinlogonSpecialAccountsUserList
and check for DWORD value with name corresponding to the username. If you want to add an account to Welcome screen, create one and set it to 1 (1 - enabled; 0 - disabled).

Good luck!
