    Lost drivers

My daughter has a laptop -- oh yeah, that she NEVER backed up.

It crashed, and wouldn't start up at all.

I reformatted and set it up with XP. But I have no copies of her hardware drivers. I could go on the net looking for them, but her machine is wireless, and the setup didn't find or see the driver(s) for her wireless card.

I took and image of her (crashed) drive before I set it up with XP.

Is there some way to find the drivers I (she) needs?

    Regards,
    Chuck Billow

    Re: Lost drivers

Contact the OEM and get a set of System CD's. This way you will always have the RIGHT OS and drivers.
These laptops do NOT do well when using a Retail version of the OS with generic drivers.

Most OEM's have a System recover partition on the laptop HD which includes the drivers.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Lost drivers

Since the one on the "crashed installation image" in any case may be old and there may be some updated version on the net (even though the drivers for XP are more less finished in development), why don't you just search on the vendor site for a driver for the card?

You don't have to use the laptop to connect to the net, of course.

What do you see in the Device Manager in regard to missing drivers?

For help in search a brand and model would be needed.

Argus, it's showing me no brand or model in the Device Manager.

    Re: Lost drivers

Obviously the brand and model part of my post referred to what is known about the laptop and what you see on its labels etc. As Dave asked, make and model is part of the solution to your question.

As for DM: you do find a device with a missing driver? With an ID it is possible to track it, however many uses other programs such as SIW etc. to find info about hardware, but the ID tracking is for the case when you don't want to install or run another program on the PC. And in this case it's a laptop, many OEMs have special "kits" with all drivers needed, or different for sound, touchpad, USB etc. etc.

Since you do know what kind of laptop it is, have you visited the OEM's site?

    Dave:

    It's a Dell Inspiron 8130.

I know what the heck happened: there was some type of recovery partition that got wiped out.

I just don't know how the heck...with no net access...

    Argh!

    Re: Lost drivers

He Chuck, is this an 8130 or a B130 we're talking about ??

I can't find anything on the Dell Driver site for an 8130 but there are drives for the 8100 series here. Or the 1300/B130 drivers are here.

Geez what I wouldn't give for better eyes! You're right Doc, it's the B130. And how'd you make your type *bold* right there? ^B didn't work...?

The machine is seeing the wireless connection, and is connected, but when I go to the net, it don't.

I seem to recall something like this when I was using wireless, but I can't remember what or how I had to fix it...

    Leif:

That site has drivers, thanks. I don't have a ticket, as there's no service call in process. But I can still download the drivers.

All I gotta do, I think, is figger out how come, if the machine is showing as connected to the network, why I can't connect to the net.

    Re: Lost drivers

    Guys:

    I found the problem.

I had changed services this week, and the wireless connection formation was/is different than what I had had...

I'm showing a *bunch* of available connections now, and I had picked the wrong one...so it was showing, but not connecting.

    Duh!!

    Thanks guys!

    Regards,
    Chuck

    Re: Lost drivers

I'm talking about the machine tag that comes on every Dell - see this which includes a link to this fuller explanation. You should then be presented with a list of all drivers for the laptop as originally configured at the time it was delivered.
