    Java installation errors

I had been getting this error for Java (Java Plug-in 1.4.2-15 is not installed properly) for quite a while so I decided to try to fix it. I removed all Java related apps using add/remove programs. I rebooted and downloaded the latest version of Java. While installing the new version I get the following error message. Error 1402.Could not open key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINESoftwareJavaSoftJava Runtime Environment. System error 5. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel.

That looked like a registry problem so I ran CCleaner to clean out registry errors it found. I still get the above error though.

I am at wits end as how to fix this problem. I would appreciate any help that can be offered. The Java site does not have live people to talk to, you must pay an expert.

    Thanks,
    Bob

    Re: Java installation errors

Normally, AddRemove programs should uninstall Java for you but for some reason, it sounds like you have some remnants leftover.

1.Double check AddRemove for any mention of Java and uninstall them.

    2. Download this from MS. Windows Uninstall Cleaner and run it to check any mention of Java. Delete any found.

    3. You could run REGEDIT and drill down to that key and delete it there.

    4. Re-install the latest version that you have downloaded.

    Re: Java installation errors

Thanks for your response viking33. I downloaded the uninstall cleaner, but no trace of Java showed up in their listing of stuff to get rid of. Even though I had never edited the registry before, I gave it a try. I was able to drill down to the key I was looking for, but when I go to delete it, it gives me an error message saying "error while trying to delete" and it is not deleted. Thanks anyhow. I guess I might have to live with this. It is not really affecting my computer except when I try to play games on Yahoo, and I have a back door link to get onto their site which lets me play anyhow.

Are you trying to uninstall/install under a user account with limited rights? You should install as administrator, or with the Run as Administrator option.

Google for JavaRa and use it. It may help.

    Re: Java installation errors

Thanks everyone for your help. Hans, I am the administrator as I am the only one who uses the computer and there are no guest accounts. KerteszAdam, I did try your suggestion, but still got the same error when I tried to install the newest version of Java. I also rebooted and tried again, but still got the same error. While I was unzipping JavaRa I noticed I had a copy of RegSeeker in the upzipped folder. I tried deleting the specific key using RegSeeker but it also failed because it goes to regedit to do it. I said what the hell and deleted the Javasoft folder using the regseeker delete button and not regedit. I was not sure of the results I would have, but when I tried the install of Java again it worked and everything is working fine. You can always count on the people on this board to try to solve your problems. THANKS AGAIN for your help.
