    A file open function I don't understand

(Edited by HansV to make URL clickable - see <!help=19>Help 19<!/help>)

I came across a web page the other day that allows users to upload documents and photos yet I don't understand how it works. I hope someone here can explain it to me. In most websites, there is a field for a file name and a 'Browse' button the user can click to open a files dialog window. At this website, however, the file window pops up soon as the cursor enters the file name field.

    the website is http://www.coleregroup.com/demos/amx/register_sp.php

Look about 3/4 down the page in the 'Promotional Materials' section

    How is this done?

The definition of the first of those boxes is <code><input type='file' name='sp_picture' class='teksInput'></code>. The relevant parameter is <code>type='file'</code>. This creates an input object consisting of a text box and a Browse button; see for example input type=file Object.

I think it's a function of Firefox 3, and I get the same thing here in the Lounge for the Attach a File control. It's possible that the text portion of the control has been blocked from manual editing in Fx3 for security reasons, but that's just speculation.

Thanks to all. I believe it is Firefox as I had the same experience with several other sites I tried... IE doesn't do this.

Thanks for editing my post to make the link clickable. Is there any way to keep the one click tag window open when creating or editing a post? I find that each time I use it, it closes and i would like to keep it open and on top of the other windows.

I think it depends on your browser. In Internet Explorer, the 1-Click TagPanel remains open after clicking one of the buttons, but behind the IE window.
In Firefox and in Google Chrome, the 1-Click TagPanel closes after using it.

It's indeed dependent on the browser:

Internet Explorer: clicking the text box doesn't pop up the browse dialog automatically.
Firefox: clicking the text box pops up the browse dialog.
Chrome: the text box isn't displayed at all; when you have selected a file its name is displayed in a label.
