    Linking read-only to spreadsheets (2007/sp1)

I have a Word document with several tables and charts linked to Excel spreadsheets. They are all set to manual update (the a option has been removed from the LINK statement). I also have the 'Update automatic links at open' option cleared. Nonetheless, if someone else is using one of the Excel spreadsheets , my Word document is very slow to open. It seems to try several times then eventually pop up a message saying that the file is in use and asks whether I want to open it read-only (repeating this for each table).

Why is doing this seeing as I have the link updating set to manual? Can I set it to always open the spreadsheet in read-only mode, thus avoiding these messages?

Does it help if you lock the tables and charts for updating? To do so, select one or more of them, and press Ctrl+F11. If you want to unlock them again, use Ctrl+Shift+F11.

No, locking the tables doesn't help. I still get the same problem.

Sorry, no idea then. I don't have Office 2007 myself.
