Rapid Antivirus

Help! I was on a web site today and downloaded one their tutorial which I couldn't get working but it brought me a very nice virus called Trojan Horse Fake Alert.bw and downloaded the Rapid Antivirus. I managed after many effort to get my AVG working and deleting the virus and Rapid Antivirus. I restarted my computer and Rapid Antivirus is still there. I keep getting messages and the antivirus keeps trying to scan my computer. How do I get rid of this Antivirus? I am desperate at the moment, I've been trying to solve this problem all afternoon and its now 6:30 p.m. I even search my computer for the Rapid antivirus and it found it in many places but when I try to locate it (its invisible). I'm having a lot of problems connecting. HELP PLEASE!!!

Remove Rapid Antivirus contains instructions for manually removing all traces of it, plus a link to a tool that I haven't tried.

Instructions to remove Trojan.Fake Alert and a tool to do same can be found here. Just in case that is the cause of the reinfection.

Hi, I found that site very confusing and I couldn't use it but I did download from my Sympatico (Bell) carrier a Scan and Clean Utility and it found all the files and took care of them. I am soooooo relieved. Thank you for your help.

Hi, its me again. Since I downloaded Scan & Clean Utility, I can't use and update my AVG free edition. I can't even connect to AVG web site to get help. Would you have any idea what is causing all this.

    Re: Rapid Antivirus

The Scan and Clean utility you downloaded is the most likely cause. Remove it and AVG should work again.

    Re: Rapid Antivirus

I have already removed the whole thing and I downloaded a new AVG. Before installing Avg I couldn't get the updates and I still can't. I also have many sites I can't go in.

    Re: Rapid Antivirus

I wonder if your hosts file has been altered to cause this problem.

Can you click Start > Run and enter the following command

notepad c:windowssystem32driversetchosts.

Copy the text from this post to make sure you get the syntax exactly right, including the . at the end.
This will start NOTEPAD with your hosts file loaded. Copy any lines in the hosts file that don't start with a # and paste them into a reply to this thread.

    Re: Rapid Antivirus

You could try the AVG removal tool at AVG Antivirus and Security Software - Tools download. That will get rid of all traces of AVG. Then see if you can get to one or two sites that you can't get to now. Then install your recent download. BTW, what operating system and service pack do you have? What browser? Is your system up-to-date with patches?

    Re: Rapid Antivirus

I cannot access AVG website at all! I have Windows XP and service pack 3, Internet Explorer 7 Silverlight and my computer is always up to date with Microsoft and Windows. I have tried to go into Windows update and that's another place I cannot access. Someone sent me through email (it works!) a Spybot Search & Remove file and it won't even let me install it.

Your hosts file is fine, that is all completely normal.

    Re: Rapid Antivirus

My guess would be that even though AVG "caught" that virus that a few bits and pieces are still on your system and causing this. Trojan viruses are known for blocking access to websites and preventing installation of tools that will remove or detect them while installing their own junk and taking you to sites you never wanted to visit.

Take a look at ]the site I linked to earlier and do a search of your computer for a few of the files listed there as part of this infection. If you find any, then I would recommend that you run the tool provided on the site or manually go through your system and remove every file listed that you find. The manual method is rather tedious, time consuming and it can be dificult to be certain that some of those files are not from other legitimate programs.
