Select Delete - illegal (Word 98 on Win ME)

Selecting a word or a paragraph, and then attempting to either copy or delete causes an illegal act and Word shuts down. Since this is on my husband's machine, I don't have the exact wording of the message but I'd be grateful for any ideas anyone has. Thank you in advance.

Hi Tibbs,

Are you sure this is Word 98 on WinMe? Word 98 was designed for the Mac. Perhaps it's Word 97?

This could be one of several problems. First I'd make sure all temp (*.tmp) and owner/twiddle (~$*.do?) files are deleted. Depending on what you are cutting Word may create a temp file to temporarily store the cut data. So if Word encounters a temp file it isn't expecting, such as a temp file with the same name as it is currently trying to create, it results in all sorts of strange errors.

If you do not know how to search for and delete these files:

Exit Word and Outlook if you are using it as your email editor
* Go to Start/Find/Files or Folders
* Change "Look in" to reflect the drive/folder that the file you are trying to open is stored in
* In the Named text box, type: "*.tmp ~$*.do?" (without the quotes)
* Click the "Find Now" command
* Delete all temp and owner files you find.

Note that these can be deleted directly from the Find Results.

To group the files for a single deletion:
* Click the first file in the list
* Press and hold <Shift>
* Click the last file in the list.

If that doesn't take care of the problem then perhaps you are using Word 2000 and this article from the MS KB will shed some insight on the problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/ar...s/Q224/6/11.ASP

This article may be applicable to Word 97 but it isn't notated, nor do see a similar article for Word 97.

Let us know what you find!

Cheers!

Thanks for your suggestion, BAM. You're right, of course, it is Word 97 . 738 temp files have been removed but the problem remains. The illegal message reads: MS097.DLL will turn off. And does!

Any further thoughts?

Thank you.
