How to create a new archive.pst file? (2007)

I've done this before but can't seem to remember how to do it!

This is what I would like to do:
1. Create a new archive.pst file
2. Configure Auto Archive to save (archive) all subsequent messages to this new file when run.

Shut down Outlook. Find the old archive file in Windows Explorer. Rename it to whatever you like. Start Outlook.

I have two archive.pst files already (different file names of course) and I want to create a third, new one. So, are you saying to rename both of those which I currently have and simply run "AutoArchive" and this new one will be created by Outlook (2007)? I also want to give this new archive.pst file with a unique name, so will that create a problem?

Do you mean you have two different archive files? What are the names? You can tell which one you are currently using by looking at the Autoarchive settings page - Tools | Options | Other | Auto Archive. That is also where you can change the file name used by Autoarchive. If you change it and it does not exist the next time Autoarchive is run Outlook will create it.

Re: How to create a new archive.pst file? (2007)

Yes, I have 2 archive files: archive.pst and archive1.pst.

Okay... so I created a new archive file in the Auto Archive options and named it "archive2.pst". I then ran "File/archive" with the date set for anything older than 1/1/2007. However, looking at my Inbox, I still have messages dated 2001 onward and my main .pst file (outlook.pst) actually got bigger; from 150 megs to 167 megs. Also, one other anomaly, I have "Notes" configured to NOT be archived, yet every time I run "archive" it is included and I have to manually move all the notes back to the main Notes folder.

Okay..... so where do I go from here? hehe

What are the Autoarchive settings for your inbox? When you run Archive is "include items with Autoarchive checked" selected?

1) Inbox "AutoArchive" settings are: Archive items in this folder using the default settings

2) A picture is worth a 1000 words..... see screenshot for my Archive settings.

There have been other threads about how Autoarchive works. See if Configure retention settings and AutoArchive in Outlook 2007 7 Microsoft Office Outlook Team Blog : Moving and deleting items with AutoArchive: clearing up the confusion help explain it.

Sorry, but beyond that I can't give you anything different. If you feel it is still not working the way you feel it should perhaps you should contact Microsoft or at least check their newsgroups.

Joe,

Thanks for the links. There's some good information there and I've read through it all carefully and saved it. So, I'll play around with some of these settings and experiment a bit to see how things go.
