Remove Footnotes (Word 97 SR-2)

Is it possible to strip the footnotes out of a document, but leave the superscript numbers in the text?

I don't see why not. But why would you need this?

This will insert numbers matching the default automatic numbering, but if you used custom symbols or numbering, it won't be able to figure that out.

Sub StripFootnotes()
If MsgBox("Clear footnotes to note numbers only?", vbQuestion + vbYesNo) <> _
vbYes Then Exit Sub
Dim intCounter As Integer, rngMyRange As Range
For intCounter = ActiveDocument.Footnotes.Count To 1 Step -1
Set rngMyRange = ActiveDocument.Footnotes(intCounter).Reference
rngMyRange.Select
With Selection
.Delete
.Font.Superscript = True
.TypeText intCounter
End With
Next
End Sub

Re: Remove Footnotes (Word 97 SR-2)

The reason is I am placing the Word document into a Pagemaker file and Pagemaker can't import footnotes. They have to be placed manually. So, once I'm done editing the Word document, I need to separate the text and the notes into two different files. I figure I can just copy the footnotes and paste them into a new Word document, but I need to maintain the note numbers in the text for when I lay it out in Pagemaker. Thanks for your help.

It wouldn't be much more work to put the footnote text in brackets immediately following the superscripted reference number if that would make it easier to work with in PageMaker. Sort of like this:

Sub StripFootnotes()
If MsgBox("Clear footnotes to note numbers only?", vbQuestion + vbYesNo) <> _
vbYes Then Exit Sub
Dim intCounter As Integer, rngMyRange As Range
For intCounter = ActiveDocument.Footnotes.Count To 1 Step -1
'copy footnote contents the clipboard
ActiveDocument.Footnotes(intCounter).Range.Select
Selection.Copy

'clear footnote number and replace with superscripted counter
Set rngMyRange = ActiveDocument.Footnotes(intCounter).Reference
rngMyRange.Select
With Selection
.Delete
.Font.Superscript = True
.TypeText intCounter
'add footnote contents in curly braces
.Font.Superscript = False
.TypeText " {FOOTNOTE: } "
.MoveLeft wdCharacter, 2, wdMove
.Paste

End With
Next
Set rngMyRange = Nothing
End Sub

The StripFootnotes macro worked well, thanks. But simply copying the footnotes to another document produced the result that all notes began with the number 1. Is it possible to isolate the notes and keep their superscript numbers?
