Weird temp files (Vista Home Premium)

In a sub-folder in Documents, I have these weird files with names like _Za02232. And they're big: 41 and 38 MB each! The file type is "File."

I tried to open them with Wordpad and Notepad, but all I see is jibberish. What are these files? Can I safely delete them?

That's typically the kind of name WinZip uses for the temporary files it creates when you add files to or remove files from a zip archive. Under normal circumstances, such files should be removed when the zip operation finishes.
Do you use WinZip, and have you had any problems with it?

Apparently, at one time a program named "clever zip" used to produce _Zaxxxxxx files. Do you use it by any chance? ( it's no longer being sold )

You could try RENAMING the files temporarily and see what if any effect they make. Then if no obvious disaster is produced, you could delete them?

Long ago, there was a time when men cursed and beat on the ground with sticks. It was called witchcraft.
    Today it is called golf!

Bingo, Hans! Yes, those files are in the same folder that stores a WinZip archive. I had thought perhaps there could be a connection to WinZip.

No, have not had any problem with WinZip. I have the latest version, and I've been using it for several years with no problem. I suppose I can simply delete these odd files...?

It's probably safe to delete these files.

The latest version is 12. Are you sure you've been using it for years?

Anyway, WINZIP is a link potential purchasers might find interesting as a software find. It is the latest WinZip with a pile of freebies that are claimed to be worth a fortune, but it is not free.

Well, I got the latest version only recently, of course; but I've been using WinZip for...oh, five years or so.
