very old Word files (Word 2003)

A friend has some old Word files created in about 1994. Is there a ready converter to make these readable (and perhaps editable) in Word 2003? [I used to update them in an old pc to higher generations and keep doing this until I had a readable version -- Word 97 or later -- but I threw out that pc a few months ago.]
FYI: When I try to open my friend's file, I get the same error message that he gets: "This file type is blocked in this version by your registry policy setting." I do have the converters installed that work with Word 97 and more recent.

Read this Microsoft knowledge base article which explains how you can work around this.
