Opening DOCs from Explorer (2003)

I've got two people with similar problems. One double-clicks on a DOC in Explorer, Word starts, but doesn't load the doc. No error message.
File Open behaves normally, and DOCs will load from Explorer if Word is already running.
The other one is with Word 2000 and the problem is similar. However this guy has since upgraded to Word 2007, and now gets a series of error messages:
'This file could not be found (Cocuments.doc)' or 'The directory name is not valid' which looks as if it's baulking at the spaces in the path. This rings a very old bell, but I thought this went out with W95. These guys are both using XP

Let them try this:
- Quit all instances of Word.
- Select Start | Run...
- Enter
winword /u

- Press Enter or click OK.
- Select Start | Run...
- Enter
winword /r

- Press Enter or click OK.
Then try to open a document from Windows Explorer.

Many thanks, Hans
OK - I see that the /r switch 'Starts Word, starts Setup, makes changes in the Windows registry, and then quits. This switch forces a re-register of Word in the Windows registry.'
but /u 'Has no effect and does not start Word. '
So why the latter?
Anyway I'll get them to try this. My other suspect is an add-in or autoexec macro

The description of the /u switch is not correct. It unregisters Word (i.e. removes the file associations etc.).

Re: Opening DOCs from Explorer (2003)

The 2007 culprit was an add-in that came with Omnipage. Which the user couldn't see as he didn't have the Developer tab visible.
Removed the omnipage stuff, did the winword.exe /u /r dance and all is now well. Thanks for your help with this, Hans
