Mail gets deleted by magic (Outlook 2007)

    Hokey Smokes, Bullwinkle!!

I didn't even know how to search for this. Over the last two weeks, I received two emails from my uncle, from whom I have received emails in the past with no issues.

But I didn't know I'd received these emails because they did not appear in my Inbox, they appeared in my Deleted Items folder. I checked Rules and Alerts, and there was nothing that would have moved his emails there.

I am not ruling out PEBCAK, though I was looking for his email today and just found it in the deleted folder. I do not recall doing anything to put it there.

Is there any other possible explanation for this mishandling of email?

Check the settings in Tools > Options... > Preferences > Junk E-Mail.. > Options.

Using the same dialog Stuart shows, add your uncle's email address to the Safe Senders list, and if you wish, on that tab of the dialog, tick/check the "Trust email from my Contacts" and "Automatically add people I email..." boxes.

    Thank you Stuart and John,

Well, all these options were already set. Although I did explicitly add my uncle's email yesterday after this incident, I have received email from him for years before last week. He's not changed his email address. And why didn't his email go into the Junk Mail folder instead of the Deleted Items folder? Both emails had the same attachment -- a small Works file.

It's a huge coincidence that I unconsciously deleted his two messages, sent a week apart, and no one else's. But at this point it may be the only option I have. My bad. But I'm keeping an eye on it.

    Thanks again for your suggestions.

Not sure I can help any further, but I'm curious to know what the file extensions are on the Works files which were attached? I'm wondering if they are seen as undesirable attachments.

    Hi John,

    It was .wps

the file name was "ltr to xxx xxxxxx 12.14.08.wps"

I've asked my uncle send two new emails, one with the file attached and one without, just to see if Outlook is taking umbrage with the attachment. He's not done it yet, but I'll post the results.

    And the results are...

Both his emails were delivered properly. This may be because I explicitly told the junk mail filter he was a safe sender. I don't have the time to undo it and ask him to send again, so I may try sending the email to myself from another email address and see what happens...

    Thanks, both of you,
    Kim
