XP Scheduler (XP Pro SP3)

    Hi all

I have set two tasks in XP's scheduler (one to set a weekly restore point and the other to run an external (ie, non XP) backup application. Although I can run both ok manually, both tasks fail under scheduler. I am running as administrator (I'm the only one using this machine) and I've established the failure is due to a permissions issue. I don't know why they will run ok manually but not under scheduler, or how to fix this. Can anyone help?

    thanks

When you say "they will run ok manually" do you mean that, when logged on as (an) Administrator, you can bring up the Scheduled Task window, right click on the relevant scheduled task entry and choose Run, and it works?

The usual problem is not having the right information in the Task tab, Run as line... - often the Set Password.

Domain users don't have a problem with this (since they always have to enter passwords!), but if you are running as a standalone machine, and you don't use a password to log on, then you can't Task Schedule tasks (a design feature). See http://support.microsoft.com/kb/310715.

That's strange - I've read the MSKB article and it should apply to me: I have Windows XP Home, I'm the sole user and I haven't set a password, so scheduled tasks shouldn't run. But they happily do, without fail! (I've scheduled security programs to run a full scan once a week at various times during the night)

I always recommend that people put passwords on their accounts because some things just don't work properly without them. I have come across people who can get scheduled tasks to work without passwords, but I have also fixed problems where scheduled tasks won't run just by adding a password.

I must have been lucky; I've never run into things that wouldn't work without a password at home.

At work, we have Windows XP Pro on a domain, so I obviously use a password there.

Re: XP Scheduler (XP Pro SP3)

Sorry, I didn't make myself very clear. I can run the tasks themselves (not in scheduler but individually) ok. However I didn't know about not being able to run task schedule tasks without a log-in and password, which is useful info, and thanks for letting me know that. Thanks for the link to the kb article, which has solved my problem.
