Slow Windows Mail = Vista (Home Premioum)

I've noted some posts about slow response from Windows Mail in Vista. I've been having the same problem. I've turned off mail filtering and have done some other experiments and it appears to be related to the amount of stored messages. I have a lot (13) of email accounts to manage and some amount of storage is unavoidable. I use a lot of Message Rules to manage my email.

This Vista (Gateway Phenom x4) machine has a lot of horsepower but my XP laptop beats the new Vista box at a walk with the same antivirus and email config (set to "leave messages on server). I've seen mention of Windows Live both in Woody's Vista book but I'm wondering if it will only be more of the same. What's so different about "Live"? For that matter what was wrong with Outlook Express? Should I switch to Thunderbird instead?

Windows Live Mail is the follow on product for Windows Mail and Outlook Express. It stores mail differently than the other two products. Outlook Express is notorious for having database corruption problems. I'd suspect the Windows Mail wold be much the same as it is the same internals with a different user interface. Microsoft claims WLM is more robust and stable.

Re: Slow Windows Mail = Vista (Home Premioum)

In 12+ years I never had failures with the old OE. I can make WM act normally when I remove stored messages at the end of the month so it does appear to be it can't handle larger volumes (only about 200 messages). My question is whether you would suggest Windows Live (more of the same or different?) or some other email client? Windows Live appears to be a Hotmail clone or Webmail (ie, Gmail?). I'm not interested in an IMAP or online email client. What are my best alternatives?

With Windows Live you have two choices. They are Windows Live Hotmail or Windows Live Mail. WLH is Hotmail with an updated interface. WLM is a desktop program you install on your PC. Even though it is a follow on for OE & Windows Mail it is a new product. I'd say give it a try first. You should not have any problem with its interface. If it does not work for you then consider another client.

Re: Slow Windows Mail = Vista (Home Premioum)

I downloaded and installed it last night -- enormous file, tons of extra junk I had to uncheck. It also wanted to install dot net, which I also declined. Then it wanted me to sign up for a Hotmail account. That is when I went looking for the (obtusely hidden) "uninstall" function. Then there's Outlook, which came preinstalled, but I have yet to find the "buy it" function. It wants an activation code which did not find in the computer packaging or on the case. Outlook had a lot of security issues in the past. Or maybe I could/should install my old Office 2000 Outlook?

Like I said, is Thunderbird my best alternative" or is there something else out there?

I'd not use Outlook 2000 on a Vista machine. Outlook 2007 is a good product. I've not had any problems with it. BTW, signing up for a Hotmail account is no biggie. You can just sign up and never use it. Then add your regular account. If you've already uninstalled it that's OK too.

You seem to be determined to use something other than a Microsoft product so someone else will have to chime in here.

Re: Slow Windows Mail = Vista (Home Premioum)

I appreciate your input but I'm not sure Live works for me. First of all, I could be mistaken but Live appeared to be an oniine service - ie, hotmail, webmail, gmail. Plus it was a 58+ meg install, it had a lot of extra baggage I have no interest in (uncheck), and it wanted to install .net (been there, don't want anything to do with it) . I especially liked the part during the install where Vista warned me about the installation from an "unknown publisher", namely Microsoft. You would think that after 30 years they might start to begin to get their act together.

I want something like OE but actually works in Vista, isn't webmail and doesn't cost me $350. That doesn't make me anti Microsoft, it just means Microsoft is apparently becoming anti-me. I don't really like the idea of Outlook but it may be one of my last options. I was hoping someone here would have stepped outside of Microsoft for some fresh air in case there might be some other choices out there. Since so many others have described the same problem with Windows Mail I know I'm not unique. I just can't figure out why Microsoft screwed it up just for Vista users.

Re: Slow Windows Mail = Vista (Home Premioum)

Windows Live is both online services and installed programs. You get to choose what to use. See Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows: Making Sense of Windows Live Wave 3, Part 1: How We Got Here and the other three parts for a more detailed explanation. As far as .NET goes, I'd suggest installing it. There are many programs and not just from Microsoft that require .NET.

As I said before, Windows Live Mail is not webmail. It is <img src=/S/free.gif border=0 alt=free width=30 height=15>. It works well with Vista. As I stated before, if it requires a Hotmail account just establish one but never use it.

There are other Loungers who use different e-mail clients such as Thunderbird and Eudora. If you posted a question in the "Other Browsers & Email clients" forum someone will surely give you an opinion or two.
You mentioned earlier that you have 13 email accounts. I suspect your problems with Windows Mail are realted to the number of accounts. I recall reading about that sometime ago. I don't remember the solution. BTW, do you have Vista service pack 1 installed? If you use Spybot see Windows Mail Fix for Slowness due to large Restricted Site List - Vista Forums for a performance fix.

Re: Slow Windows Mail = Vista (Home Premioum)

OK, I'll try the link. I reinstalled Live and so far I am totally unimpressed. This looks more like AOL meets Facebook than something useful for business. Why does making things more obtuse make them better? I have 14 email accounts on my own server. Live has one on Live. In the immortal words of Dick Cheney, "So?". So I trade a program that takes 1 minute to respond with the now famous spinning donut to a new online program that takes even longer to load. Wow! Impressive! So where is the "add new" email account and where is the "import message rules"? Where is the "add message folders"? Where is the "add signatures"? Exactly what makes this an email client rather than a teen toy?

What am I missing here? Is this like Vista hiding the "shut down" link? (And what brilliant mind came up with that one?). Oh, I get it, it's MS' new trick to boost sales of Office with Outlook, right? If that's true, then how come it is impossible find where to"activate" the bundled MS samples and actually buy them? I have webmail on my own server and for me it is free. Windows Live is "FREE" just like AOL and NetZero disks. As you can tell I am losing interest at warp speed. Thanks for your response but I think I'm done here Paul T not withstanding. No, I am not running Spybot on this machine. I have the Updates turned on so it should be up to date. I have this Vista (Quad Phenom 64) machine because SP3 screwed up my main XP machine for a week until I figured it out ,and I have to make a living. Now Vista screws up my email. Great! I can't wait to see what's next. Oh, yes, IE8 - Now I have to rewrite half my web sites because IE8 still can't handle normal standard CSS. More fun.

Thanks but no thanks for the email to nowhere, and bye-bye.

Re: Slow Windows Mail = Vista (Home Premioum)

I'm sorry, but Windows Live is absolutely positively NOT an email client, it is just Hotmail in a new shirt. It's nothing more than just a toy. Further, Thunderbird imports folders, messages and accounts from Outlook, Outlook Express and Eudora... but not Windows Live. Paul T explains all the functions that Live does that have nothing at all to do with email. That's like building a new car... no engine, no wheels, and it doesn't go anywhere, but hey, it's got Blue Ray video in all the seats!

Re: Slow Windows Mail = Vista (Home Premioum)

I use Windows mail on our Laptops with Vista. We do NOT have any slowness as you describe, but we do NOT have over 5 accounts on any machine.

I do not care for the "Live Mail" either but it does work for most.

If you have that many accounts to manage at the same time then you do need to use something in the world of Outlook (not Outlook Express). I have been using Outlook since Outlook 95 and am currently using 2003. I do NOT use Outlook 2007 as it does not come with "Home and Teachers" version, and that is why we are using Windows Mails on those machines.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Slow Windows Mail = Vista (Home Premioum)

That is EXACTLY what the problem is. MS pushes everybody into Vista by various means including a defective "final" (SP3) update for XP, then they switch everybody to Windows Mail in Vista and (apparently) sabotage WM to force them to buy Outlook, except they don't get Outlook unless they buy the overstuffed and over priced $$$ Office package and Outlook 2000 won't install in Vista (but Publisher 2K and Excel 2K will, for some reason). You really find that logical and acceptable, do you? Give me a break, honestly.
