Dressingup a form (ms Access 2007)

In order to dressup a form, i like to give the buttons an appropriate image. I know when using the wizard, some images are available, but what if you like to choose your own images. In what kind of format need these images to be? Does they have to be icons or images in jpeg, png or tiff format. And if they has to be icons, what kind of resolution is to be choosen? Is it preferable to embed the images rather than linked? Futhermore, how to delete a image that is embedded on a form ?

While "dressing up" a form, don't overdo it. If you use many images, it gives your form a "busy" look.

To add a custom picture to a command button:
- Select the button in design view.
- Activate the Format tab of the Properties sheet.
- Click in the Picture property.
- Click the ... button to the right.
- Click Browse...
Access 2002 lets you use .bmp and .ico files, perhaps Access 2007 offers more choices.
The width and height of the image can be any values, but it's best to use images that fit on your command button, i.e. probably quite small.
I'd use embedded, this is faster and easier for this type of picture.

To delete a background image from a form:
- Open the form in design view. Do *not* select anything on the form.
- Activate the Format tab of the Properties sheet.
- Clear the Picture property, and confirm when Access asks you whether the picture should be removed.

For what it is worth I Never (well almost never) put images on command buttons.

When you put an image on a button, you assume that either

The meaning of the image is self explanatory; or

The users will learn what the pictures mean, and the image adds something that justifies this extra learning[/list]I find that almost no button images are self explanatory, so when I find myself looking at a db with images on the buttons I have no idea what the buttons are going to do.

About the only exception I regularly make is delete record buttons on continuous forms. I want these to be small so I use a graphic I expect users to learn to understand.
Regards
John
