Sluggishness after installing XP SP3 (XP SP3)

I installed XP SP3 about 2 weeks ago and I now experience very sluggish performance at various times. I especially notice it in Word and Excel (both Office 2003 version). When I click on Print or Print Preview from either Excel or Word it takes a very long time to react. Outlook seems slightly more sluggish than pre-Sp3 but not nearly as dramatic as Word and Excel. Haven't touched any of the Office proudcts as far as patches go anytime recently.
Any thoughts on the cause or ideas to try?

I can only comment that we have been using Office 2003 SP3 on Windows XP SP3 for several months at all computers at the place where I work, without any signs of sluggishness.

Re: Sluggishness after installing XP SP3 (XP SP3)

In general terms a service pack, as you know, updates a lot of files on the PC, and in the very short run it is possible that the HDD becomes a little more fragmented than before. But after some hours to a few days, with XP working in the background, checking the best layout of the files, perhaps run a defragmentation etc. everything should be back to normal. In most cases it isn't even noticed after a restart.

Is the sluggishness you see mostly related to the Office software, and, or, in particular print related actions?

Just as an example; print issues have been dealt with before in service packs, for instance before SP2, such as this one:
Print server becomes sluggish or has too many named pipe connections from Windows XP-based computers

However, that hotfix was later included in Windows XP SP2.

Do you see anything related to your issues in time in Event Viewer | System? (Start | Run | eventvwr.msc)

What do you see in the Task Manager when it is "extra" sluggish? (Process tab, sort on CPU activity)

It's in the middle of the night here, and even if I'm a night owl ( <img src=/S/hello.gif border=0 alt=hello width=25 height=29> Hans), I disconnect half my brain at that time, and since it's also holidays I'm only working with a quarter of my brain at the moment, sorry.
