    User Level Security (Access 2007)

    Hi,

I know this is a broad and possibly big debatable question, but does anyone have a good reason why Access 2007 does not have user level security? There is so much technicalities around the issue of new security in 2007, but there is NO good reason why MS has removed the user level security. Is this one of those dumbing down for ease of use scenario's or is there a bigger point that I have missed. I do not require a technical answer...just a laymens (simple) reason? I would just like to understand. I used to like and often rely on user level security...and it worked so well in 2003. Why make the change???

    TX

Re: User Level Security (Access 2007)

From Security Considerations and Guidance for Access 2007:
<hr>For Access 2007, the Microsoft development team wanted to make Access easier to use. They decided that the internal security system used in Access since the early 1990s made the software unnecessarily complex. Therefore, they deprecated the internal security system in both the ACCDB file format and the new version of the Access Database Engine that accompanies it.<hr>
So it's a deliberate dumbing down. The article also points out
<hr>Although the ACCDE format can help protect your intellectual property (forms, reports, modules), it does not provide good security for your tables or queries. For that, you must invest much more time into other solutions, such as Microsoft SQL Server.<hr>
This is no doubt the other reason behind the change: Microsoft wants you to use SQL Server for "serious" data storage, with Access as an easy-to-use frontend.

Gosh... I don't like this!!! Its like making a Porsche with an entry level engine in it.

They did not do me any favours doing this! Besides, the security wizard was sooo easy to use! <img src=/S/sad.gif border=0 alt=sad width=15 height=15>

    TX for the informed reply!
