    Strange error message (XP SP3)

The last few days I have been getting this error message when I first boot up into XP.
I suspect it has something to do with the floppy drive, ( yes, I still hold onto the floppy, even in the new configuration ) if I click on try again, it appears to check into the floppy drive. The busy LED comes on. Same error message shows up.

I don't have a disk in the drive and it didn't complain when I first set this hardware up.
If I click on continue, all proceeds OK and no problems are seen.
I can access the floppy an read a disk OK.
I have no clue as to what the numbers indicate?

Are any of the shortcuts in your Recent Files folder on the floppy disk?

No mention of any references to the floppy there.
I cleaned out the folder and even deleted all of the TIFs and temp folders and the prefetch folder.
    No fix.

Re: Strange error message (XP SP3)

    Hello Bob,
c00000a3 means what the dialog box title says, "Drive Not Ready".
    ---
    0xC00000A3
    STATUS_DEVICE_NOT_READY

{Drive Not Ready} The drive is not ready for use; its door may be open. Check drive %hs and make sure that a disk is inserted and that the drive door is closed.
    ---
    Perhaps 75b6bf7c is the key to the abovementioned door? <img src=/S/grin.gif border=0 alt=grin width=15 height=15> <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15>

Prior to the OS install, when checking the hardware, did you check everything in BIOS; I assume you did; any updates done since then in BIOS? Perhaps could do a check that it is the usual "1.44 MB: 3.5" drive" or what you have plus cable check again. Perhaps a bad floppy disk controller, FDC? Stuart had a good suggestion. Device Manager is all OK?

You are sure it's the floppy? How about all types of IDE etc. drivers to you new mobo.

Guess you have seen this thread, as an example:

    Hi Argus,

    BIOS check is OK.

    FDC? Maybe?

Device Manager all good, no flags.

Reason I think it has to do with floppy is that when I click "retry", it shows a floppy drive activity LED.

I have to check that link more thoroughly for possibilities.

Just rebooted and did not get the error. ( this time )

Re: Strange error message (XP SP3)

Hey Bob, did you setup the new machine as dual boot like you had before and with two separate physical hard drives? The reason I ask is that I'm wondering if it could be that you have a problem "similar" to mine with these two Seagate (external) drives! The darn things are very slow to respond, even when they've recently been accessed and I've had zero luck getting help from the manufacturer. Maybe your other drive isn't responding immediately when you boot, hence you're finding that if you continue, all seems OK. Just wondering...

Re: Strange error message (XP SP3)

    Al,
The new config is dual boot into two separate but larger partitions on the same physical HD.
Both boot partitions are in the new eSATA slots. One of the older 80 gig HD is installed in an EIDE slot for just backups and storage.

The HDs seem to run with a good response time, it's just this NEW error message that started well after the new hardware was in place and running. It also seems to come up soon after the OS is running, not during the boot cycle.
I'm pursuing the floppy theory still but of course, now after two boots, no error message? Waiting for the other shoe to drop now.

Re: Strange error message (XP SP3)

    UPDATE.
It looks like it's the floppy drive itself. Reinstalling the FDC didn't change anything.
I tried again to read a floppy ( where I was successful before ) and now it doesn't recognize that there is a disk in the drive.

The floppy drive was one of the few things that I didn't get new. It was one I had in my "supply" box that was supposedly a good drive! I have a number of others around so the only problem is just to motivate myself to open up the box again and replace the drive.

For now, I have uninstalled the FDC in the BIOS and from Device Manager.
NO more error messages. ( as yet )

Did you check all the connections before you gave up on it?

    Joe,
    No not yet.
That will come when I reopen the box, then if nothing obvious, out it goes and in goes another.

Re: Strange error message (XP SP3)

    Problem Solved!

Finally got a chance to open up the box and stumbled on to the fix. The floppy cable plug into the MB was being SLIGHTLY held out of place by an adjacent cable. I dressed the other cable out of the way and reinserted the FD cable in the MB. Viola!
All is back to normal. No more error message after I re-enabled the FDC in the BIOS. Whew!
