Crash Dump and Firewall issues (Vista Home Premium SP1)

Wondering what could be going on. Here's the Blue Screen Data (spaces added between numbers for clarity). Context follows.
    Bad_Pool_Caller
    STOP: 0x 000 000C2 (0x 000 00007, 0x 0000 110B, 0x 080A 0007, 0x 87D 940 940)

I came back to my computer twice now and windows had crashed without restarting. I used System Restore to roll back to 48 hours ago. Last night I installed the mIRC client, and gave it permission via my firewall to access ports. The System Restore in effect uninstalled that program.

After the crash dumps, and upon loading Windows and other apps, PC Firewall Plus and/orThreatfire notified me that some things had been changed (sorry, I don't recall the error message) and that it was putting them back the way they should be. There was no Allow/Deny or Cancel option. (I wonder if it was redoing what System Restore had undid!)

Also, PC Firewall Plus and/orThreatfire repeatedly raised prompts to permit various processes to run or to access the Internet. The processes look like Microsoft applets or processes, or Software automatic update checks...that type of thing. Right now I've disabled these two programs.

    And ....... ???

Are you able to get the computer to boot to the desktop ??? Are things running as they should or is the system still crashing or behaving strangely ??? I wouldn't be disabling your firewall simply because it is asking you to grant permission for programs to access the internet. That's what it is supposed to do. You might want to check with Threatfire Support to see if they can shed some light on your issue.

Re: Crash Dump and Firewall issues (Vista Home Premium SP1)

My system seems to be running fine. My two questions remain:

    1. What is the nature of my crash dump? It is my experience that people here can interpret the meaning and implications (sometimes) of the sets of numbers and letters from the blue screen.

    2. After a System Restore, do firewall type programs "think" that a malicious event has occured (rolling back system changes 48 hours, in my case) and actually re-institutes the changes that Windows Restore has removed at my request?

To help clarify #2 above, here are the types of things my firewall is asking me to verify again...these are usually Microsoft/Windows processes. Each time it asked whether to allow permission, and each time it asked if I wanted the program to remember this decision in the future. Sometimes it asked if this decision should apply to all (ports? connections? I forget the word).
SQM Consolidator (sorry, didn't get the exact text)
....Feeds (didn't get the full text)
    Media Center Store Update Manager
Yahoo Manager (monitors low-level mouse input events...hoop procedure associated w/ all existing threads running in the same desktop as the calling thread)

In a earlier post you stated "PC Firewall Plus and/orThreatfire", does this mean that you are running two (2) firewalls?

If so you need to remove one of them, as one should NEVER run two or more Firewalls or AV programs at the same time.

Threatfire is not a firewall, but it monitors incoming threats like viruses AS they happen (usually). No to be confused with a virus SCAN which is after the fact. I am not using multiple firewalls.

Most good AV programs will do a scan AS the file is being downloaded. But at the Threatfire web site is is CALLED a AV program.

Re: Crash Dump and Firewall issues (Vista Home Premium SP1)

okay, thanks. it's just the firewall that is asking permissions. it may be that threatfire was notifying me of system/registry changes (my spyware detector actually notifies me of changes also)

Anyway, I'm primarily interested in answers to the questions I posted earlier.

Some of these Protection programs will mess with the System restore and block their files from being changed by system restore.

See Bad Pool Caller Fix | Registry Cleaner to Optimize PC Performance & Bad Pool Caller | Registry Cleaner to Optimize PC Performance for more information about the error. I'd recommend that you NOT try any of the fixes since you say your PC seems to be fine ow.

    To answer your questions.....

    1. Not this time. None of us seems to know and the only information about that error code that was available on Google, pointed back to this thread.

    2. Not usually. If you added any Windows or Office updates during the 48 hour period they might be removed or rolled back, but System Restore does not change anything other than system files. Granting permission to access ports by programs you recognize should be OK, but that may also depend on what you are doing on the computer at the time and what program wants to access the port or the internet. Things like Media Center Store Update Manager and Yahoo Manager are probably just asking to be allowed to check for updates and, if that is the case, you should probably grant permission without you being notified. But if you're not sure about the program, just say no until you are prevented from doing something that you want to do or have asked the computer to do.

Just thought I'd add that as far as the Blue Screen error code goes, Microsoft doesn't know either.
