    Average number not shown (2007)

    Hi,

When I use the AVERAGE function in Excel, instead of giving me the actual number, I get the formula, e.g:

    =AVERAGE('datasheet31-12-2008'!AA2:AA22

How can I make it show me the result of the calculation instead of this?

    Alan

Re: Average number not shown (2007)

    Hi Alan,

It may be that Excel is showing the formulas (formual mode).

Try this: In Excel, click on the Formulas Tab, and then click on the Show Formulas button in the Formula Auditing group. This should switch off the formula mode and show you the answer.

Rudi has pointed out the most likely explanation of your problem (and its solution).

If you weren't showing formulas, another possible cause is that the cell is formatted as text. If a cell is formatted as text, anything you enter in it, including a formula, will be shown just like you entered it.
To correct this, format the cell as General. You'll then have to edit the cell and confirm without making any changes.
