Style Outline (2007)

I am just starting to work with Word 2007. I am using one of our 2003 templates to document our company standards for 2007. The template has styles created which include outline numbering. I am trying to change the starting number for the document, but cannot seem to get to the place where Start at number is available.

I have tried Modify for the Style (Heading 1). The Format options do not seem to display any dialog where I can change anything.

I can see that the option is Set Numbering Value on the right-click menu when I right-click after the first style number, but it is grayed out.

What am I missing?

You might want to download this useful Microsoft interactive tool.

<UL><LI>Home tab
<LI>Paragraph section
<LI>Numbering button (2nd button top row)
<LI>Down arrow immediately to the right of the Numbering button
<LI>Set Numbering Value (at the bottom of the pop-up)
Thanks for the information, Don. I have the download document, which is usually very helpful.

I tried the steps you documented (after I unprotected the document. Da!), but when I set the value and Enter, I get two Heading 1 lines. The first line has # 1 and the second line has # 2 with my heading text. If I delete the first line my style number goes back to # 1.

If you want to control the numbering in the Headings you are dealing with a style.
<UL><LI>Ensure that the heading you wish to use as the start point for your numbering is a numbered style (Heading 1)
<LI>Place the cursor anywhere within the heading of interest,
<LI>Follow the steps from my previous message.
Re: Style Outline (2007)

We are using List Styles for our Heading styles numbering. These List Styles work in Word 2002/2003. Will we need to recreate something similar in Word 2007, since we cannot get the numbering to work in this sample document?

It is not going to make me happy if we cannot get the 2003 templates converted and working in 2007. We have about 150 templates for Word that use styles most with outline numbering (usually legal outlines).

Do you know where and how I can define the List Outline Styles in Word 2007?

Re: Style Outline (2007)

I am at a loss to understand your problem. We also had a number of templates developed in 2003 that we attached to documents we were authoring or formatting. When working in 2007, we attach these same templates, and the headings; numbered paragraphs and numbered lists all work as I have described.

FWIW we do not work in XML -- it is somewhat of a mystery to me. However, having opened your xml document, and attaching one of my templates to it; once again the numbering behaved as described in my earlier posts.

Perhaps when the other Loungers recover from their New Year's festivities they will be able to shed more light.

Sorry. <img src=/S/sorry.gif border=0 alt=sorry width=15 height=15>

Is the first line hidden? If so, just click the show/hide button, and you'll see only the heading you want to display. On my computer Word makes the hidden levels when you choose continue from previous list and tick the advance value (skip numbers) checkbox in the set numbering value dialog.

Thanks, Pam. Changing the display options to not display Hidden text did the trick. I will need to document that for our standard setup of Office 2007.
