Vista Clean Reload (Home premium)

Hope some kind person will make 2009 my happy new year. Have Dell 1720 Inspiron laptop 6 weeks out of warrantee. Clean reload from DVD resulted in blank screen with operable mouse pointer after 12 hours. Auto start up repair doesn't function. Start up repair booted from DVD hangs up at "event log diagnosis" . Safe mode boot up stops after loading drivers up to and including for "crcdisk.sys" Image restore is not available on this system. Tried three times once with a different disk. Initially "start up repair" came back immediately with "unable to repair". After switching off signature recognotion the results displayed 1 repair attempted but hung up on event log diagnosis. Final attempt was with a wiped and repartitioned disk. All attempts have had the same results. I am not the most experienced with this problem, but if its worth <img src=/S/2cents.gif border=0 alt=2cents width=15 height=15>, if you have access to a windows xp disk, try a clean reload using the xp platform and then upgrade with vista.

As I say, just a thought...

Is this DVD from Dell or another source?

After a rebuild, do you go up to Dell and download and install ALL of the updated drivers for the Model of machine and OS?

Dave thanks for your input. Yes the DVD's I have tried both came with new 1720 laptops.The system hangs on booting so I can't do anything

Rudi. Good move. Loaded XP ok after altering the Bios SATA setting. Unfortunately I only have XP Prof so it won't let me upgrade to Vista Premium

With any XP version, you should be able to upgrade to Vista. Why do you say it won't?
Any messages given? Or is the Dell partition preventing this?

If you are out of warranty, you might think of just blowing away the Dell partition also. The trying for a clean install of Vista.

There are specific upgrade paths from XP to Vista depending on the XP & Vista versions. See Upgrading from Windows XP to Windows Vista - Windows Vista Help for the various options.

Have you tried loading Vista with the changed BIOS setting? Thanks Guys for all the help. Loading XP initially failed but at least it told me it couldn't find the hard drive. Changing the Bios setting solved the problem and yes Joe I did go on to try Vista with the XP bios settings and it loaded without problem. Just to be sure I then set the bios back to factory settings and tried to load Vista. It failed,changed back it worked. Out of interest tomorrow I'm going to see what dell has set the 2nd laptop to. I've learnt more about laptops in the last three days than the last 30 years. Happy new year to everybody and thanks again.

You probably used a Vista DVD from Microsoft even if supplied by Dell. You'd need to supply a driver for your SATA drive during the install process.
