    Delivery Status Notification

Are such messages legitimate, or could they be dangerous to open? IFrom research on the web, they appear to be okay to open, but just double checking....

    Thank you

Many such messages are spam, unfortunately. If you receive a delivery status notification for a message that you haven't sent, it's obviously spam and should be deleted.
In general, it's safe to open such messages as long as your security software is adequate and up-to-date. Don't open attachments or follow links unless you trust them though.

    Re: Delivery Status Notification

Thank you, Hans. Hard to know what message it applies to since no further info is given, unless you open it or have the option to "view the source" (as in AOL).

    Happy New Year,

    Re: Delivery Status Notification

That's one reason I use Mailwasher pro spam blocker as my email "front-end" for previewing emails while they're still on my ISP's server. It lets me preview the entire message, including the header, so I can see everything. The difficult thing about the preview is that I can't see any content that's in HTML format except in its raw text form.

I too occasionally get those non-delivery messages and every one I've looked at had NO indication that any email I had really sent was involved, so I delete them on the server as spam or virus bearing problems. Good luck.

    Re: Delivery Status Notification

Do you actually request Delivery Receipts when you send emails? (I don't know if many servers still honour them as they can be used to verify email addresses to spammers.)

Obviously, if you don't, they can't be genuine!

    Morning, Leif -

Thank you for your post. AOL doesn't have such a choice when sending email. So, glad I did not open it.

In Outlook Express, if you right click on an email, you can select Properties>Details>Message Source to view the contents of the message and the header.
