    Word's 'Normal.dot' (2007)

In previous versions of Word, the Normal.dot held customization made to Word & all kinds of other "stuff." If the Normal.dot was deleted, a new one was created by Word the next time Word was opened and all the "stuff" was gone. I'm noticing different behavior for Word 2007 Normal.dotm. I know Building Blocks are now saved in its own template, but when I deleted my Normal.dotm, Word did not create a new one, or at least if it did, now where I deleted the first one. Does anyone have any insight into the new "Normal" behavior? Thanks.

Word should save a new Normal.dotm when you have changed a setting that is stored in that template. As long as you haven't done that, Word will run with the 'factory settings'.

Hans: As a test, I deleted my "Normal.dotm" and when I went to look for it in the Windows Explorer, there was no Normal.dotm. I could not find one, and all my customization (i.e., I changed the new Normal Style) were still available. That's why I'm confused and thought perhaps the "normal.dotm" had changed. ???? <img src=/S/confused3.gif border=0 alt=confused3 width=45 height=45>

I don't have Word 2007 myself, so I can't experiment. I hope that someone who does will be able to help you.

Which one did you delete, the one listed under User's folder or under the Office folder?

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    Re: Word's 'Normal.dot' (2007)

I have deleted normal .dotm a couple times in the past few months. Word created a new on on startup each time. Here's the path to my normal templates:

    Cocuments and Settings[myUserName]Application DataMicrosoftTemplates

If you are on a company computer or on a personal one where someone has created additional log-on id's, there may be normal.dotm's for each user logon, so be sure you pick the right user.
