explorer search match part (XP SP3?)

    FYI
I didn't realize that Explorer's search function parsed components of the name string.
I searched for "42922 cfi_group_service.DOC" and Explorer found "42922 non-cfi_group_service.DOC", which indicates that it had parsed the search string at (perhaps) each space character and matched on each sub-string.

I would suspect it falls under the category of 'All or PART of the file name' - no?

I didn't know that. The space appears to act as a * wildcard.

A little testing shows that the space is not acting as a * wildcard, it is acting as a Boolean AND, so the order of the filename parts makes no difference.

Nice one Stuart. You win the cat!

I flipped the sub-string "42922" to the right-hand end of the search string, omitting the ".doc" extent, and it came up with 4 hits (the two DOC and the two data TTX files, as shown in this attachment)
I then appended the .doc extension to the search string and got ZERO hits, so it seems to me that no match is made for "*42922.doc", which is how it should be.

I think in this case "no".
Note that the substring "non" is embedded in the file name.
The search (as shown in my original posting) seems to have ignored the "non" and used the substrings to either side to satisfy the search constraints.
The good news is that you didn't win the cat.

    Just ANOTHER reason for NOT using spaces within a file name <img src=/S/evilgrin.gif border=0 alt=evilgrin width=15 height=15>

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

    But see later responses.
The issue is not critical in most cases - visual inspection of the results screen tells us the story.
I think it might be critical for those of us who issue a search across vastnesses of hard drives, and use only the count of files found (in the status bar) to make a decision.

    You're correct, thanks for that! <img src=/S/thumbup.gif border=0 alt=thumbup width=15 height=15>
