Downgrade from VISTA (XP Home)

Question: I am about to buy a new Laptop. It will I am sure have VISTA installed. I had read before that it was possible to Switch Vista to XP. Is THAT still possible and should I get the Vendor to do so as a condition of sale?

Re: Downgrade from VISTA (XP Home)

From here.....

"Most major PC makers will sell you selected Vista models with an option, which sometimes costs extra, officially called a “downgrade,” but sometimes marketed as an “upgrade” or “bonus.” You may have to hunt through the selections offered by the computer makers to find one that has this XP option.

When you order a PC in this fashion, you are technically buying a Vista machine, and Microsoft counts it as a Vista sale. But the computer company actually loads XP on the new hardware, in place of Vista, before it leaves the factory. In many cases, you also get discs containing Vista, in the event you wish to switch to the newer Vista operating system later."

In addition to Doc's information, be advised that ONLY systems with Vista Business or Vista Ultimate have these downgrade rights.

You can also install your own version of XP if you have the CD... from your previous computer, maybe. Make sure the vendor has XP versions of any required drivers.

If you bought the PC from an OEM you do NOT have the right to install XP on a new PC. OEM versions of XP are tied to the original PC. Your point about checking for XP drivers is right on though.

Why bother? Unless you have some older hardware or software that you absolutely require go with Vista. As long as the machine you are purchasing is properly configured for Vista it should run fine. Vista is more robust and stable than XP.

You're right regarding OEM versions of XP, Joe. I should have been more clear. I was referring to using a retail version of XP, which you can install on any PC provided you install it on only one PC at a time.

I also agree with your other response re: sticking with Vista.

Cheers,

Stick with Vista and learn it, you will learn to enjoy it.
NOTE: many of the OEM's are NOT providing XP drivers for the new devices that are in the Vista machines.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Just a little more from today's issue of Windows Secrets.....
"Dell has gradually been inflating its surcharge for "downgrading" a PC from Vista to XP. The bite rose last June from U.S. $20 to $50, then spiked in October to $100, and now is a whopping $150."
