Excel slow in Vista (Excel XP)

I have the same version of Excel on my laptop and my desktop computers.

Desktop: Windows XP Home; Norton System Works antivirus; Intel Core Duo 2.2 ghz; 2 gig ram
Laptop: Windows Vista Business; AVG Free antivirus; Intel Core Duo T7500 2.2 ghz / 2.2 ghz; 2 gig ram

Problem is that all Excel operations that occur instantaneously on the desktop (XP) take 3 to 15 seconds on the laptop. Even simple operations like putting a border around multiple cells simultaneously.

Macro protection is set at LOW in Excel on both computers because the protection is provided by the anti-virus software (and I have some files with very large macros that take forever to open if macro protection is turned on in Excel).

That's all I can think of to tell you. If I missed an important detail please let me know and I'll add it to the thread.

Does anyone know if I have missed an Excel or Vista setting, or if this is just to be expected with Vista?

    Thanks,
    BH Davis

PS: I am NOT a Vista fan!!

Does it help to start Excel in safe mode (hold control key when you start Excel)?
