Does your colleague actually open the e-mails or only preview them? There is an option to mark messages that have been viewed in the reading pane as read (see Mark messages as read or unread); if this is turned off, messages that have only been previewed will not be marked as read.

    Hi Hansv ,

He does not use the reading pane, I double clicked on on of the unread emails and viewed the email and then closed the page, bu still it shows as being unread.

    Thanks,

    Hi Hansv,

I have logged in outlook web access with the same user log-in and it does the same thing, after a few minutes all the messages that I read and where showing as unread they are now showing as read in both outlook and OWA. Does anyone know what could cause this problem. Just to let you know that we use Exchange 2007.

    Thanks

1.) Are Exchange & Outlook up-to-date with patches?
2.) What service pack is installed for each product?
3.) Is the user running cached Exchange mode?
4.) Have you tried toggling the Reading Pane settings for marking mail as being read?
5.) Is the mail in the inbox rather than in a public folder or some other folder?
