Please allow me to butt into this thread, but Doc Watsons remark about WMVPs and Dave's suggestion about allowing them to access our computers, I have a comment to make. Personally, and I'm sure many other members would be more than willing to pay for receiving remote asssistance.

I'm certain that this would cause an awful lot of work on your part to set this up. At least consider the proposal, it sure would be appreciated.

    Thanks for your consideration,

    Gloria
To stretch this theme just a little more Gloria may I suggest that [if I remember reading right] to utilize RA all the one in need has to do is (via email) agree a time with the one assisting and synchronize their logging on so the two computers can "talk to each other" so to speak. SORRY if that seems to trivialize the procedure but that's how I recall reading it in the ComputerActive mag some time ago. PERSONALLY speaking, being retired with plenty of free time BUT SADLY limited knowledge I would be only too delighted to dig someone out of the mire if I were able. I suspect also that - in some cases- it may not take much more time to perform a check on settings and correct where necessary than it does to type out a lengthy explanation. I base this last remark on some of the rather lengthy posts that I have read of late on the lounge which must have taken you volunteers quite some time to compile. As ever, (at the risk of sounding patronizing) I am most grateful for every response I have had over the past year or so. I still can't boast of being anywhere near the top of the IT premier league but have learned quite a lot thanks to you experts. .... Thanks again SF.

I know I've already caused one detour in this thread, Gloria, but since Silver Fox seems to be pinch hitting for the OP, I think he'll deal with it.

But on this totally new subject of remote assistance, we should take that topic to another thread if you want to continue. However, I will tell you that it HAS been asked already here in The Lounge in the past. It's not, nor can it be in the foreseeable future a Lounge "mission" for it would be terribly unmanageable and difficult if not impossible to maintain "fairness" to all. It's just not something we can take on. Now, what ANY Lounger does on his/her own, outside The Lounge is another matter.

Fortunately, we can help with most things in a forum like this.

If there is any MVP, Administrator or Lounge expert that cares to take on the job of going into my computer, contact me and we can set a price. I will start a new thread on this subject and we can take it from there. Where do you suggest I post this new subject? I'm almost sure he or she would have at least two customers, Silver Fox and myself.

If anyone wants to take you up on this, they can send you a PM, and you can negotiate by PM or e-mail.
The Lounge forums are *not* the place for this kind of thing.

You're so right Hans. I apologize for even bringing it up here. I did so because I thought the suggestion would reach more users and not just the admins and MVP's. I will not do that again.

This is about remote assistance, no need for boats, planes nor trains.

I can see the connection as far as OP is concerned but what on earth does "Pinch Hitting" imply? It is certainly not a saying I have ever come across in my 25,855 days on this planet. SF

Sorry 'bout that my good man! Sometimes I forget that slang doesn't cross the pond very well. It's an American slang phrase, derived I believe from our game of baseball. It means someone who is filling for, or standing in for someone else.

(In baseball, a batter is replaced in his turn "at bat" with someone else who is thought might be a better hitter.)

Thanks Al & Leif. How much easier it is when we are all singing from the same hymn sheet, I looked the link up that Leif mentioned and it now makes sense. [pinch-hit (American) to do something for someone because they are suddenly unable to do it (often + for ) He was pinch-hitting for one of the regular TV sportscasters, and was a great success. In this little island the commentators would say John Doe has just come off the "Subs" bench and is warming up on the touchline. SUB obviously being short for Substitute but there you are, one does not have to cross date lines to encounter such diversity of speech. It is not uncommon here to hear vastly different expressions for the same thing in two villages just a few miles apart. Another very common yet strange thing you guys say constantly which - if wrote here by schoolchildren- would get a thick red line through it by the teacher is "OFF OF". SF
