Windows 7 Impressions & Problems

Getting a chance to poke around in the Win7 beta and so far I have mixed results.
I KNOW IT's A BETA and I have run betas before but?

1.After searching high and low for a link to emails, I finally find out that the beta doesn't include Email. Nothing like telling that up front!

2. The biggest beef I have so far is that when looking in Windows Explorer, it doesn't list my XP drive at all. it shows the rest of the drive partitions except for XP? As I posted, I am triple booting with XP, Vista and Win 7, and I have 2 other separate partitions on a second HD. All show up except XP.

3. The other things are just having to get used to the way 7 runs but a lot appears to be Vista in another OS.

More to come. I'm interested in how others are experiencingreceiving Win 7?

Re: Windows 7 Impressions & Problems

I had the same trouble with the missing drive. I found (disk mgmt) that it's there but didn't get assigned a drive letter. I didn't get too much choice about WHAT letter to assign to it since I have two USBs and two multi-drive card readers. Anyway, I got a drive letter and now it shows up.

I haven't checked it yet, but didn't know about the email thing. What is that icon onscreen about feedback? It must be via web site communication.

I'll have to check that disk management thing next time I'm back in W7.

I did send two responses to MS via feedback. How it gets there is another question?

Microsoft has decided to remove quite a few programs from the OS with the e-mail client being one. This will enable Microsoft to have a different release cycle for these than for the OS. You need to download Essentials - Windows Live. You might also want to read up at Paul Thurrott's SuperSite for Windows. There is some video at This Week on C9, Windows 7 Beta available, CES news, Windows Live, and more | This Week On Channel 9 | Channel 9 & Windows Scenic Animation Overview | yochay | Channel 9.

Re: Windows 7 Impressions & Problems

I am NOT having issue about losing my XP drive, but I am ONLY dual booting none that triple booting stuff.

As for missing programs, this is NORMAL for Beta, they (Microsoft) does not like telling the testers what is different (missing) or what has changed. This gives them a idea of what a NEW computer user will go through

The "Feedback" is a method for the tester to send back to MS information. This is NOT a "Bug reporting" device.

Now running HP Pavilion a6528p, with Win7 64 Bit OS.

Re: Windows 7 Impressions & Problems

If it's Dual, Triple or Quad boot, it STILL should show up in Win Explorer as a valid drive partition.

Feedback and Bug Reporting is kinda "splitting hairs", IMO. They ask for a lot of detailed info for just a user feedback. Hopefully, whatever it's called, they pay attention to feedback. Why else would they release a public beta, if it wasn't to give it test in the real world?

You are correct, it should NOT be happening.

Re: Windows 7 Impressions & Problems

I was going to say this earlier but got distracted by the drive letter thing and forgot. I'm in Windows 7 now and have only installed a few software bits like FastStone Screen Capture and Graphics Viewer and Firefox. Of course, I installed Avast on installation and it's updating each time I boot Win 7 as expected! I'm limiting myself to daily afternoon periods of exploration, so my "progress" will be rather slow.

As you can see in this attachment, I have a problem with a few drivers but have only tried to fix the sound, unsuccessfully so far. I tried the SoundBlaster drivers that I downloaded for Vista but they don't work. Not an unexpected behaviour and I'll keep checking for updates.

It's interesting to note that I did the same thing in Win 7 that I did with Vista regarding using my ONE user profile for Firefox and it's working like a charm. I simply had to give "permission" to Win 7 to access the profile folder and I was in quite nicely.

I see there are plenty of "reading" links, some provided by Joe, so that should keep us busy for awhile. I will have to ASK what the private joke is with the background fish because I don't get it!

Have you tried letting Windows 7 find the drivers?

Re: Windows 7 Impressions & Problems

Yes, I did on the sound and it couldn't find anything. I'm not concerned about the USB floppy (not required) and I have some drivers and app software for the scanner that I haven't taken the time to try. I was at the SoundBlaster site again yesterday and there may be other drivers that may work but I haven't downloaded them yet. This is ALL expected stuff for an early beta and doesn't concern me. So far, I'm still looking around through the Win 7 menus and Control Panel and so on. Lots of fun digging around and it looks like it's gonna be a good system.

Al, are you evaluating the 32 or 64 bit version of Windows 7? Did these devices work under Vista?

Cheers,

I'm sticking with 32 for now. And yes, all devices work with Vista and XP.

Re: Windows 7 Impressions & Problems

Theorectically Vista drivers should work. Then again Creative is one of those companies who have a checkered past when it comes to Windows drivers. Are you able to install it and it won't work or it won't install? Did you run the install as Administrator?
