    After Patch Tuesday Install

I allowed the most recent MS patch to be installed when I left the office last night and this morning I re-booted first thing when I arrived at work.
I frequently use XP Windows Explorer to find files (usually Excel) that I have worked on recently and then double-click on the file to open in in the application. Now, when I double-click on a file Excel opens, but not the file I double-clicked on. Chances are this has nothing to do with the MS patches that were installed. But for some reason one or more settings are now different than what I had yesterday. Hints, clues or solutions will be greatly appreciated.

What happens if you right click on the file and select Open from the dropdown menu ??

    The wierdest thing!
I have created shortcuts on my Start menu and each of them opens a new instance of Excel, BUT no file. When I Open from within Excel a file opens correctly without opening a new instance of Excel.
The Explorer setting is to double-click to open (not sure that means anything).

    Re: After Patch Tuesday Install

Perhaps it had something to do with the MS patch(es), maybe not.
I usually run CCleaner then MS Defrag after an install so I keep up maintenance regularly. But I also run CCleaner's Registry Integrity tool which usually suggests deletion of some entries. To date I've never had any problem with this process.
My solution was to use System Restore to a point two days ago. Restore appears to have fixed my problems.
Think I'll hold off for a while on the patches and clean-ups.

I haven't had problems with the latest Windows update.

If you can't open a workbook by double-clicking it from Windows Explorer, you can try the following:
    - Start Excel.
    - Select Tools | Options...
    - Activate the General tab.
    - Clear the check box "Ignore other applications".
    - Click OK.
    - Quit Excel.

    I'd try Hans' suggestion. He's much better with Excel. <img src=/S/blush.gif border=0 alt=blush width=15 height=15>

But, IMHO, this appears to be something related to the MS update and your system. If nothing was different but the update when the problem occurred and doing a System Restore (in effect, removing the update) resolved the issue, I'd have to suspect that it was the patch.

    Re: After Patch Tuesday Install

    Doc,
I installed the latest patch yesterday morning and have not had any issue. I still have not run CCleaner's Registry Integrity tool. My version of CCleaner is one version behind, so I think I'll update CCleaner to the latest version before I try again. I'm still a little wary so I'll wait a few more days to ensure that everything's working right and remains stable.
    Thank you.

Never hurts to be a little cautious when making changes. I usually won't install more than 2 patches at a time. Just in case there is a problem, I have an easier time figuring out what the cause might be.

    Glad things got sorted out. <img src=/S/smile.gif border=0 alt=smile width=15 height=15>
